The News: Danielle Haim Played Drums for The Killers
We all have dreams of live music collabs--one of those dreams where you're at a live show by your favorite band when suddenly, they bring out a guest instrumentalist or vocalist and totally change the game for that Instagram video you had planned on posting. That's exactly what The Killers fans got at Outside Lands festival this weekend, when the "Mr. Brightside" indie rock four-piece welcomed Danielle Haim (from the cover star sister trio on our June/July music issue) to play drums for them. The only thing left to say now is: #jealous.
The Look: Black Overalls and Nothing Else
Sounds scandalous, I know--and maybe it is. But, until the serious cold weather hits, I think this look is the perfect outfit for the lingering warm summer nights we still have left to enjoy. I always try to show some skin in the summer, whether it's rips in my jeans or tanks with the sides cutout. These black overalls from Frame Denim's fall '14 collection are sophisticated enough to wear with even a striped tee underneath, and classy enough to go with no layers at all.
The Face: MAC Glitter Affects in Antique Gold
If you ever feel like your nighttime look is missing a little something, why not try glitter? I don't mean go crazy by covering yourself head-to-toe in the shiny stuff, but I am talking about adding a little bit of shimmer with my favorite enhancer. MAC Glitter Affects glitter pods come in tons of awesome colors for amping up your look with some electric hues, or for adding a bit of glimmer to a look that's feeling just a little bland. The latter is the reason I use the good stuff. My suggestion? Shake the bottle then take off the lid and dab a Q-tip inside the lid instead of the bottle. This will give you just enough to swoop over your eyelid for an extra party-time touch without overdoing it.
The Inspiration: Catherine Deneuve in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Whether or not you've ever seen The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Jacques Demy's French drama flick from 1964, you can still be super inspired by its leading lady Catherine Deneuve. The film itself is a colorful musical, both in its set design and costumes, but throwback It Girl, Deneuve, is what (in my opinion) makes the entire movie. She's seriously just too cool.
The Song: "We Will Become Silhouettes" (Acoustic cover by The Shins) - Originally by The Postal Service
When I was in high school, I was a huge fan of The Postal Service. Most people are familiar with their hit "We Will Become Silhouettes," which, yes, is a great song. But if you ask me, the acoustic cover by The Shins makes this track one of the best songs for getting into a good mood--especially on a Monday.
