With the Oscar nominations announced yesterday, last night's Critics' Choice awards felt like an afterthought. And while it's hard to believe that Hollywood was ready to celebrate itself again less than a week after the Golden Globes, the event was enough to bring out the usual awards circuit suspects—names like Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston, who saved face despite their very glaring Oscar snubs earlier that day. And while major winners included Julianne Moore and Michael Keaton, the night belonged to Jessica Chastain, who was given the inaugural MVP award for appearing in four movies this year. (Her Zero Dark Thirty costar Chris Pratt presented the award, so, bonus.) Chastain took her opportunity on stage to call for more diversity in the film industry, a plea that felt all the more prescient after an Oscar nominee field that was dominated by white dudes. Anyway, take it away, Jess.
