Today, Marilyn Mosby, the state attorney for Baltimore, announced that six police officers will be criminally charged for Freddie Gray’s death, which has officially been ruled a homicide. Among the charges are second-degree murder, manslaughter, and second-degree assault. It’s a history-making decision, especially in light of how many disturbingly similar instances of police brutality have gone un-prosecuted. With the announcement, Mosby made a clear statement to protestors in Baltimore, as well as the entire world: The time for police officers to be held accountable for their actions starts now.
Mosby said, "To the people of Baltimore and the demonstrators across America: I heard your call for 'no justice, no peace.' Your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of this young man. To those that are angry, hurt, or have their own experiences of injustice at the hands of police officers, I urge you to channel the energy peacefully as we prosecute this case."
