French girls are known for that cool-without-trying look and perhaps none possessed that spirit more than singers/actresses Francoise Hardy and Jane Birkin (British but Parisian at heart). Their effortless beauty inspired makeup artist Tom Pecheux to focus on a slept-in smoky eye. To get it, he brushed khaki colored shadow onto the lids, then traced the upper and lower lash lines with dark green pencil, forming a graphic cat eye at the outer corners, and then intensified it by layering black cream liner on top. Pecheux wanted the lashes to look "heavy" so he loaded on coat after coat of mascara. The morning-after effect (i.e. makeup running down the face) was achieved by coating the lids with lipgloss and the lower lash lines with shimmery eye gloss. And though the shine might have made the liner a bit messy, he wanted a defined border of shadow so he took a pointed cotton swab dipped in makeup remover to the crease to clean it up. Pecheux complemented the badass eye with subtle flushed cheeks and a matte neutral lip.
