Ever since breaking out in Bridesmaids and on The Office, Ellie Kemper has been one of Hollywood's most underused actresses. Sure, she's popped up on The Mindy Project and on some show on Crackle, but Kemper deserved her own starring role to really show off her comedic charms. Well it's Tina Fey to the rescue. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt marks Fey's return to TV following her successful run on 30 Rock, and stars Kemper as a girl who gets rescued from an "underground apocalpyse" cult and has to redo her life in New York City, a dark twist on the fish-out-of-water premise. Hijinx ensue with the help of a loony new roommate and ridiculous new boss (played by 30 Rock's Jane Krakowski), but judging by this new trailer, it's a perfect showcase for Kemper's talents. The whole show, which has already been renewed for season two, will be available on Netflix starting March 6.

this is the 'fifty shades' scene no one wanted to see
There are some things in life that universally no one asks for—mosquitos, pointless reply-all emails, sketchy fan-made videos, etc. So when we saw a video made back in 2012 that Uproxx unrooted recreating the infamous tampon scene from Fifty Shades of Grey using The Sims, speech bubbles, and Microsoft Paint illustrations, we knew that this was a creation brought to us not by any means of supply and demand, but by destiny. The Internet works in mysterious ways.
In the notorious scene, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele get it on in the bathroom, not in spite of Ana having her period, because she has her period. Their shockingly straightforward interaction goes down like this, as quoted from the book by Pajiba:
"When did you start your period, Anastasia?" he asks out of the blue, gazing down at me.
"Err… yesterday," I mumble in my highly aroused state.
"Good." He releases me and turns me around.
"Hold on to the sink," he orders and pulls my hips back again, like he did in the playroom, so I'm bending down.
He reaches between my legs and pulls on the blue string… what! And… gently pulls my tampon out and tosses it into the nearby toilet. Holy fuck. Sweet mother of all… Jeez. And then he's inside me… ah! Skin against skin… moving slowly at first… easily, testing me, pushing me… oh my. I grip on to the sink, panting, forcing myself back on him, feeling him inside me. Oh the sweet agony… his hands clasp my hips. He sets a punishing rhythm - in, out, and he reaches around and finds my clitoris, massaging me… oh jeez. I can feel myself quicken.
"That's right, baby," he rasps as he grinds into me, angling his hips, and it's enough to send me flying, flying high.
"Oh jeez" is right.
It's hard to say whether the action of the scene or the writing is more jarring, but we're grateful that we will be spared from seeing Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson recreate the tampon action, which will not be appearing in the upcoming Fifty Shades film. Granted, if you still need to get your fix of the infamous interaction, never fear: The Sims are here to reenact every dubious act you could ever imagine. That's right, baby.

anna kendrick spills her guts, literally
Anna Kendrick is über-talented, gorgeous, and extremely personable. But what really sets the Pitch Perfect actress apart is her warmness and, of course, the uncensored quips she's known for, which give way to a strange, widely accessible type of humor. Needless to say, we've wanted to be Kendrick's BFF for quite some time now, because, honestly, who wouldn't? So we invited the actress-slash-singer to hang (literally — we took trapeze classes with her), try on some Dolce & Gabbana, comb through an entire tray of rings, have a photo shoot, and ultimately become our February cover girl. (Spoiler alert: It was all in an attempt to get her number so we can eat pizza and watch romcoms together.)
Because everyone should experience the weirdo magic that is Anna Kendrick, we made a NYLON TV segment where we talked style icons, Hollywood badasses, Beastie Boys, creepy dreams, and world peace (she's a fan). She also does a little dance, which is pretty amazing. So watch below and see what her IRL-BFF Aubrey Plaza meant when she told us, "She's really something special. She's what America does best."

how celebrity trainer tracy anderson keeps her clients in shape
There are three numbers that stand out from my first and only Tracy Anderson #beatshourofpower class: 8, 18, and 1. The first (8) stands for the number of counts the ballerina-turned-workout-guru utilizes for each move. The second (18) stands for the number of times I thought I was going to throw up straight onto the hardwood floors of her Tribeca Method studio. The third (1) stands for the number of times I actually did—thankfully in the bathroom, which is quite possibly the one place in the entire venue with air-conditioning.
"Up until now you didn't work out, but now you do," Anderson told me before the class. "It's absolutely the most life-giving thing that we have. We're meant to move. We have to—period." It's that philosophy and ride-or-die mentality, along with 20+ years of research and paying her dues, that has made Anderson one of Hollywood's go-to trainers-slash-life-gurus. But speeches can only go so far, and thankfully the petite (she stands at 5' 0'') mother of two's techniques get results. Her program, aptly named The Tracy Anderson Method, exercises conventional muscles (abdominals, hamstrings, biceps), but also taps into what she deems "accessory muscles"—tiny muscles that are often left unengaged. By initiating the entire body, using dance-like moves and strange arm-flapping motions, participants slim down quickly. And since some of her celebrity clients (Kelly Ripa, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Nicole Richie) are oftentimes referred to as "too skinny" or "waiflike," Anderson has gotten herself into hot water in the media. But some of her other clients, like Jennifer Lopez, Girls executive producer Jenni Konner, and occasionally Lena Dunham, use Anderson's techniques to maintain their curves and strengthen themselves.
"Your muscles are the thing that we have to completely change our structure, become our most balanced selves," says Anderson. "If you want to look like a body builder, you have permission to do that if it feels like you're meant to be that. I say this to a lot of people that it's really important for you to hone in on your own individuality and what you feel like is right to you."
I should take this moment to say that I am not a huge proponent of working out all the time (see: here), yet taking her class—which is actually void of all conversation, instead focused on the "vibes" of the room (the moves are adjusted accordingly)—was about as close to a healing mind-body-soul act as I have ever experienced. And even though my body seemed to be shutting down like I downed a fifth of tequila during the class, there were three things that kept me going: peer pressure, fear of embarassment (I took the class alongside New York Times reporters), and the music.
"I think it's really important for you to have a workout that is to music. I'm a huge advocate of this," says Anderson. "And some of the more meditative fitness routines are quiet when you're connecting yourself and it causes a lot of things to come forward in you, then maybe you might not want to deal with it. It's just uncomfortable. So let the music kind of speak through you and energize you. It does it, naturally."
After the class, with one beet/kale/carrot/any-other-imaginable-health-foot juice down, I felt stronger and healthier than I had since I stopped actively playing sports. And that in and of itself is part of Anderson's objective, which is what helped foster and strengthen her relationship with Konner and Lena Dunham. "I'm very big right now on the message of every woman really being themselves," says Anderson. "The way that they have crafted the show exposes that we're all real: everyone's different, we're all unique, we're all real—and that's powerful."
So where exactly is the future of fitness headed? "I mean, I can tell you that I've been designing for women for two decades, and the butt has always been something that they want lifted and higher and all that, but I think that—I don't think the butt's going anywhere by the way, at all—but I think that what's going to go and shift and change. I think we're going to get more balance, but I think it's going to be about not everyone having a big, huge, lifted butt to be sexy." And with that more aggressive Yin and Yang mindset, it seems that all that's left to do is start the health revolution. And the best way to do so, according to Anderson? Grab your wireless Powerbeats2, turn on this TA-playlist, and just get moving.
premiere: stream suburban living's dreamy debut album
The suburbs can be tight, claustrophobic and bland. And though the name of Wesley Bunch's music project brings to mind those residential wastelands where most of us grew up, his songs certainly do not. The Virginia native has been recording as Suburban Living since his 2012 debut EP, Cooper's Dream. Two weeks before moving to Philadelphia, Bunch put the finishing touches on his first full-length album, which we're thrilled to exclusively premiere here. The self-titled, eight song record, out on Brooklyn label PaperCup Music, is a consistent trip into an emotional dream-pop landscape, as radiant guitar chimes and wistful synths float over driving bass and mid-tempo drums, while Bunch's echo chamber vocals call to mind post-punk heroes like Ian Curtis and Robert Smith. "I loved making this record," Bunch told us. "I wanted to take my time and create something I’d be proud of. My patience turned into sporadic recording form late 2013 to July of 2014. This one is a litter darker and more personal to me than 2012’s Cooper’s Dream EP and 2013’s Always Eyes EP." You can stream the whole thing below, and trust us, you'll want to.
And here's where and when you can catch Suburban Living on tour:

throwback thursday: when mary-kate olsen was our boho cover girl
It's fair to say that the mid to late aughts were when the bohemian trend truly thrived. And in '08, no one mastered the look more than Mary-Kate Olsen. Given her love of layers, collection of fringed accessories, and easy-going vibe, it was a no-brainer to have her as our January It girl.
The former actress has certainly always been busy, but in 2007, she sat down with us to talk about her foray into the high fashion world, her roles in Weeds and The Wackness, and how she defines her personal style: "I think my style inspiration comes from old movies and playful layouts. Kind of like dress up." Draped in a glamorous stole and decked out in the most effortless cool girl clothes, Mary-Kate jams out on-set in our behind-the-scenes look at her cover shoot.
Since then, MK has gone on to get engaged, write a book, and work with her sister on countless other fashion ventures with their brands The Row, Olsenboye, Elizabeth and James, and StyleMint. In honor of #ThrowbackThursday, take a trip down memory lane and watch our NYLON TV episode of the boho babe in action. Don't be surprised if you find yourself stealing some of these looks to take your festival outfits to the next level.

This Björk interview will break your heart
Every great musician needs at least one heartbreak album. Dylan had Blood on the Tracks, Beck had Sea Change, Kanye had 808's and Heartbreak. Now, out of nowhere, that supernatural force known as Björk has given us her own. It's called Vulnicura, and it's a gut punch. Björk suddenly released the album two days ago after it was leaked, and without warning we were suddenly listening to the devastation of a relationship in ruins, filtered through the mercurial mind of a musical genius. Vulnicura, which Björk described as "a complete heartbreak album," chronicles her 2013 split with the artist Matthew Barney, with whom she has a child and it somehow manages to bring this strange, brilliant being down to earth. It turns out that Björk is human after all. If you want to experience the agony of Björk's heartache (and maybe help mend you own), Vulnicura is available right here.
But you can also head over to Pitchfork, who published an abridged version of an expansive interview with the singer (the full version will appear in the next edition of their journal, The Pitchfork Review) that sheds some light on the pain she mined to make this album. At several points in the interview Björk chokes up and changes the subject, signs of a heartbreak that will be everlasting. If you're in the mood to catch feelings, keep reading.
"When I did this album—it all just collapsed. I didn’t have anything. It was the most painful thing I ever experienced in my life."
"In a way, I also rediscovered music, because [chokes up]—I’m sorry—it’s so miraculous what it can do to you; when you are in a really fucked situation, it's the only thing that can save you. Nothing else will. And it does, it really does."
"It’s really hard for me to talk about it. It really is in the lyrics. I’ve never really done lyrics like this, because they’re so teenage, so simple. I wrote them really quickly. But I also spent a long time on them to get them just right. It’s so hard to talk about the subject matter; it’s impossible—I’m sorry. [tears up]"
"But it’s like you were saying, there’s no easy exit through. I wish. I would have taken it if I could. [long pause] It’ll be emotional. I’m just going to have to cry and be a mess and do it. Right now, my life is not getting any discount, as we say in Iceland. There’s no easy access. I have to go through that to get to the next bit."

willow smith's "topless" photo is causing a stir
The latest topless photo scandal is one that isn't even topless. Fourteen-year-old Willow Smith is now the target of offended anti-nipple activists after wearing a top that features a photo of a women's breasts.
With the #FreetheNipple movement quickly gaining traction, it's no surprise to see more celebrities taking a stand for top-frontal nudity: Miley Cyrus posted a since-removed topless photo on Instagram noting her support and Chelsea Handler is a frequent champion of nipple equality, posting another topless photo every time one gets deleted. As adults, they are free to show their body however they want, but it is crucial to note that #FreeTheNipple isn't explicitly about sex. But now that a younger star is making a statement, people are freaking the freak out. Even though Willow kept her actual clothes on, her fashion choice has ignited a rampage against her actions because they show her knowledge of her own sexuality. As viewers, we are forced to think about her body. The original photo was removed from her Instagram, but perhaps in spite, the singer made it her profile picture.
At 14-years-old, Willow is too young, according to both laws and social mores, to be considered a sexual entity—and therefore even too young to visibly acknowledge her awareness of the female anatomy in general, at least in a public forum. (Let's also remember that as a preteen, the singer frequently discusses different dimensions, emotions, and life with the wisdom of an ageless, enlightened being.) Yet last May, she also received backlash for then posing in bed with shirtless 20-year-old actor Moises Arias, to which her mother Jada Pinkett Smith responded with disgust that the photo would even be interpreted as sexual. While society as a whole rejects the notion that a 14-year-old can understand and embrace her own sexuality, it also refuses to accept that a young girl can be in control of her body in a way that also isn't inherently sexual at all. The issue is that there is no space between 14 and 18 (the legal age of consent) for a teenager to exist. Either they are a sexual creature, or they are not; the process for exploration is something with which society feels incredibly uncomfortable.
By being fully clothed, her Instagram was not pornographic or even something to shame, and as a 14-year-old girl with an awareness of her own sexuality, Willow is the one in control of her own body. Willow tweeted in November, "The day that women can casually be topless and not be raped or degraded will be the day that women will be equal in society," she remarked, clearly aware of the fact that her "young" body is already subjected to plenty of criticism. As people rush to judge or cry "innappropriate," they attempt to take away a young girl's own power and agency as a self-aware individual. By attempting to to curb a woman's expression of her own body image because of socially instilled preconceptions, the system that prevents women to become truly equal in society is strengthened — or at least we forget that, at 14, most women are aware of the power of the nipple. As Willow said, "Women are systematically exploited by the system." Let's be better than that.

this is how anna kendrick does a night out
We hosted our February covergirl last night at Gracias Madre in West Hollywood and we're super into Anna's decision to slick it back and straighten it out. We're used to seeing the Cake star doting a more Bohemian set of waves (much like in our cover issue), but Kendrick looked ultra-polished yesterday, and it was a surprising, glamorous treat. With her clever pairing of that cheeky pineapple graphic tee and a polka dot maxi skirt, it seems Anna picked up a couple of styling tricks from the shoot.
Check out Anna above and click through our slideshow of other partygoers from last night's soirée.
james franco teases his new sex scene
James Franco just blew up our Instagram feeds in a single photo. The eclectic actor teased quite a NSFW screenshot from his upcoming film, "I Am Michael," where he plays a former gay magazine editor turned anti-gay activist, that has him and his co-stars Zachary Quinto and Charlie Carver caught in the middle of a steamy ménage à trois.
selena gomez debuts a choppy new 'do
We think 2015 might be a year of change for Selena Gomez. She supposed cracked up at SNL's parody of her exboyfriend Justin Bieber, she (maybe) is dating the super cool DJ Zedd, and now she's traded in her signature, flowing locks for a new choppy lob—and January isn't even over yet.
Gomez debuted her new look on Instagram while wearing a pair of gold, Almost Famous-inspired sunglasses, adding a definite element of glamour to the shot. Her trademark style has always been natural, but now her layers add a new carefree element to her appearence. This isn't the Selena that dominated the Disney channel years ago—her fuss-free, choppy locks make her look all grown up and a whole lot edgier.
While the 22-year-old has been working on films and music steadily, we're not sure if her new cut is fresh for a role or just a refreshing change of appearence. Short haircuts are all the rage in Taylor Swift's inner circle. Maybe getting the chop is just another part of being in the pop princess's girl gang—not a bad deal, if you ask us.

watch the broad city girls interview sleater-kinney
Last Friday night, in the Liberty Hall basement lounge of New York's Ace Hotel, NPR held a secret meeting-of-the-minds with the members of newly reunited Sleater-Kinney (Corin Tucker, Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss) and Broad City's Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson. In a room with 150 of the hippest New Yorkers imaginable (yes, Sleater-Kinney's biggest fan and potential roadie Fred Armisen was there, snapping photos like a true fangirl), the five women—all feminist role models in their own rights—touched on the riot grrrl movement, Portlandia, female empowerment, and, of course, the band's new album No Cities To Love.
"There is kind of an inevitability to this band," Brownstein said. "It does feel like something that exists partially outside of us." Part of that inevitability, which the band touched on multiple times throughout the 80-minute interview, is the "constant sense of agitation at the world" the Sleater-Kinney members feel (they spoke about worldy events, like the recent attacks in Paris). "I think there's an unapologetic obliteration of the sacred," added Brownstein.
No Cities To Love, which was released earlier this week, displays a similar mindset to their previous albums. "I think there's a certain amount of caring and compassion that this band has always had, that I think is really important in terms of a bigger dialogue with culture." Still, there are some notable differences, which is to be expected after an eight-year hiatus. "Phase one was a lot more confrontational," said Tucker. "And I needed to be, because it was a very different time then and to have the chutzpah to get on stage and own it... that was just what I needed at that moment and that's totally fine." Added Weiss, "I feel like this record sounds desperate. We're just exploding. I felt that writing it was not comfortable."
Watch the interview below (and prepare yourself for an unexpected Amy Poehler cameo).

Hollywood's brightest young stars are your newest x-men
For the next installment of his X-Men franchise, director Bryan Singer has been scouring Young Hollywood with a fine-toothed comb, searching for the next crop of rising stars to fill some tights. X-Men: Apocalypse, which is set in the '80s and picks up after 2014's Days of Future Past, will introduce younger versions of the famous mutants Storm, Cyclops, and Jean Grey. Singer was said to be testing a bunch of young talent for the roles including Zendaya Coleman and Saoirse Ronan, but yesterday Singer ended speculation when he announced the new castmembers on his twitter account:
Meet our new and brilliant young mutants: @Alexshipppp as #Storm @SophieT as #JeanGrey and @TyeSheridan as #Cyclops. #XmenApocalypse
— Bryan Singer (@BryanSinger) January 23, 2015
The most famous name here is Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones. Turner will play the telepathic mutant Jean Grey, who was played by Famke Janssen in the earlier films. Tye Sheridan, considered one of Hollywood's brightest young talents thanks to strong work in films like Mud and Joe, will star as the laser-eyed mutant Cyclops, who was played by James Marsden in the previous movies. And Alexandra Shipp, who most recently played Aaliyah in that atrocious Lifetime biopic (a part she got after Zendaya dropped out), will take on the weather-controlling Storm, who was played by Halle Berry in the past.
The movie will also introduce Oscar Isaac as the titular villain, an ancient mutant who, according to the actor, has the power to "change all the molecules in his body." Also returning to the franchise are James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, and Jennifer Lawrence, whose Mystique is rumored to be the central character of this movie as Fox looks to capitalize on her megawatt fame.
On Twitter, Turner pretty much summed up how all three of these young actors must be feeling today:
OMG

watch emma watson's latest speech on gender equality
For a few months now, U.N. Global Goodwill Ambassador (and sometimes actress) Emma Watson has been at the forefront of the feminist movement, working to enact change and enforce gender equality via HeForShe—"a solidarity movement that calls upon men and boys to stand up against the persisting inequalities faced by women and girls globally." Since the organization's first conference, the initiative has generated over 1.2 billion social media conversations, and given Watson's latest speech, we anticipate that number to triple in size.
"It is my belief that there is a greater understanding than ever that women need to be equal participants in our homes, in our societies, in our governments, and in our workplaces," Watson said at the World Economic Forum in Davos today. "And they know that the world is being held back in every way because they are not. Women share this planet 50/50 and they are under-represented, their potential astonishingly untapped."
To further the HeForShe initative, the organization is launching its second phase: IMPACT 10X10X10. According to the UN womens' website, it is "a one-year pilot effort that aims to engage governments, corporations and universities as instruments of change positioned within some of the communities that most need to address deficiencies in women’s empowerment and gender equality." The five-minute speech didn't go into specifics or announce a particular plan, but Watson did make a call for action. Asking girls, husbands, parents, businessmen, writers, CEOs, and young men to speak about their stories:
"Girls: Who have been your mentors? Parents: Did you make sure you treated your children equally? If so, how have you done it? Husbands: Have you been suppporting your female partner privately so that she can fulfill her dreams too? Young men: Have you spoke up in a conversation when a woman was casually degraded or dismissed? How did this affect you? How did this affect the women you stepped up for? Businessmen: Have you mentored, supported or engaged women in leadership positions? Writers: Have you challenged the language and imagery used to portray women in the media? CEOs: Have you implemented the women’s empowerment principles in your own company? What change have you seen?"
Go to HeForShe.org or use #HeForShe to tell your story.

5 Online Dating Facts That Shock Non-Single People
Whether I was arrogant or just ill-informed, I'll never know, but I thought everyone knew about online dating. We live in an age where information about medical conditions lives on the same page as information about the circumference of a Kardashian ass. Everyone knows everything now, right?
It's not as challenging as say, a Bar Exam, but it's up there. Non-singles love to toss out this suggestion as a quick fix to the "problem" of being single. "Oh just go online, my cousin's friend from work met her husband that way." And while it's true that one in five relationships begin online, that's still only one in five, and that's still only relationships that actually start. This doesn't speak to the hundreds of thousands of us on online dating who have nothing to show for our efforts.
OMG but you've matched with soooo many people! But have you noticed that of the 350 men I've matched with in the last year, only 17 have said hello to me? Only 3 have said hello back to me after I made the first move? And I've only met 4 in person? You think it's an ocean full of fish, but when you get down to it, it's more the size of a cereal bowl.
Yell at me as loud as you want, but I think the guy should make the first move. I will always think this. For years. For years I've done the emailing, the asking out, the date-setting, the place-picking, the time-setting. I've thrown the slowest softballs you could ever ask for. I'm over that.
And here's the rub. Women go on online dating to date. Men go for vagina. There. I said it. Heavens me I feel better. You try slamming an ocean of women with their intentions against a fleet of men with their intentions and what the hell do you think is going to happen? NOT MUCH THAT'S WHAT.
