Watch the trailer for Guillermo Del Toro's gothic horror 'Crimson Peak'

$

Hey look, Guillermo Del Toro made a haunted house movie with lots of sex and ghosts and Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam and now we have a trailer!

Really that sentence could have ended at "Guillermo Del Toro made a haunted house movie" and we'd be sold, but add all that other stuff and what we have is one of the most anticipated cinematic events of the year.

Crimson Peak—which is already being called the visionary Mexican director's "ultimate masterpiece"—follows the adventures of a young author (Wasikowska) who is torn between her affections for a childhood friend (Hunnam) and the temptation of a creepy mystery man (Hiddleston). The whole thing plays out in a gothic house of horrors, and continues Del Toro's streak of bringing his wholly original ideas to life. And while Pacific Rim didn't exactly ignite a Kaiju craze in Hollywood, here's hoping Crimson Peak can revive a genre that's been pretty stale since The Shining

Crimson Peak hits theaters on October 16. Watch the trailer below.

Waiting by the phone for your crush to ask you out on Valentine’s Day is so 1950. We think the way to celebrate the holiday is, in the spot-on words of Donna Meagle, to "Treat Yo’ Self."

Even if you do have a date (congratulations, by the way), you should pencil in at least 30 minutes of P.Y.T private time. The extra dose of self-care will not only give mad love to your skin, hair, nails, and senses, but make you look—and more importantly, feel—good in a way that no one else can. And if a hot stranger on your jam-packed commute home just so happens to notice your relaxed aura and how amazing your smell? Well then, that's just the cherry on the damn-I'm-good cake.

Here are a few ways for you to “do you” this Valentine’s Day, no matter what your MO:

If: Your Significant Other Is Out Of Town

Try: A Lip Conditioning Treatment for a Soft Pout

If dueling schedules are delaying your Valentine lovefest, prime your chapped lips (thanks, winter) for your next meetup with ultra-hydrating tools. Bite Beauty 5-Night Fix for Lips contains a pocket-sized Lip Fix Exfoliator (a tacky formula that smoothes lips) and Agave Lip Mask (a vanilla-spiked balm that nourishes with olive fruit). Unlike typical sugar lip scrubs, this treatment doesn’t require the messy rinsing of granule-covered lips. If you’re going out, follow up with a bit of color. Try Lipstick Queen Look of Love, a volume of three looks-good-on-anyoneuniversal lip colors, which to gives your a lips a natural, Shakespearean “young in love” flush.

If: You want a post-orgasm complexion that reads, “just laid” (even after chilling at home, solo)

Try: A glow-inducing, DIY facial

Is it just us, or does everyone run into their crushes and frenemies post-facial (messy hair, no makeup)? Kill the awkward commute by becoming your own at-home aesthetician. Start by double cleansing: Lift away dirt and makeup with essential oil-rich Jurlique Nourishing Cleansing Oil, then buff away complexion-dulling dead skin cells with Suki Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser. Make a tea with Fig + Yarrow Winter Herbal Steam, cover your head with your best Stevie Nicks scarf and breathe in eucalyptus, juniper berry, elder flower, ginger root, and a bevy of other complexion and sinus-clearing herbs. (Or turn on Dr. Gross Steamer Solutions for a more spa-like steam.) Then apply a soothing mask (like Nude Purify Mask for congested types, Airelle Skincare Hydrating Manuka Mask for dry skin types or Eminence Organics Strawberry Rhubarb Masque for those in the middle) and just chill for ten minutes. Follow with a refreshing microfine spritz of moisturizing toner (like Aubrey Organics Sparkling Glacier Complexion Mist) and a dose of collagen-boosting retinol and antioxidants, like Sunday Riley Luna or a soothing hydrator, like Farmaesthetics Nutrient Dense Fine Facial Oil.  Finish with a shea butter lip balm like Dr. Alkaitis Love Your Lips. The bright results may find you ditching your standing facial appointment altogether.

If: Your Body is Overworked

Try: Soaking the Pain Away

Set up your own staycay soak: It’ll relieve body aches, exfoliate, moisturize, and warm your overworked soul. To set the mood, pour yourself a drink, light a room-filling fragrance (like a light and fresh C.O Bigelow Neroli Candle or the refreshingly earthy-without-being-musky Blackbird Incense), dump a whole bag of epsom salts (like Calgon Lavender and Honey-infused version) into the tub, and fill the tub with warm water. (The magnesium sulfate can help loosen tense muscles.) Top the water with a some yummy-smelling oil, like the famously heaven-scented Aveda Shampure Composition Oil (which can also be used on the scalp) or cult- favorite REN Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil. Use a homemade sugar scrub to cleanse and exfoliate the skin, or try a more gentle version, like Rituals Ayurveda Purifying Body Scrub, which is made with mineral-rich multani clay. Your skin will need extra hydration after soaking in warm water, so once out of the tub, take extra time to massage an oil or cream into your skin. For those who dig floral scents, jouer body butter captures the true—not perfumey—fragrances of gardenia, jasmine, and honeysuckle; for those wishing to conjure a more tropical locale, NARS Monoï Body Glow II oil brings a French Polynesia vibe to your bathroom.

If: Your Power Comes From Giselle-Worthy Hair

Try: A Restorative Treatment from Your Crown Chakra

Winter’s low temps (not to mention incessant beanie wearing) can trigger dry, static-y hair. When washing your hair, eschew the typical rush job and take time to massage your scalp. Use a gentle shampoo like Oribe Shampoo for Beautiful Color, then restore bounce and shine with a mask like Davines Nounou Hair Mask, which helps mend brittle strands after a 10-minute soak. While the mask sets, massage your skin with a calming oil like Dermalogica Stress Relief Treatment Oil. Once your hair is dry, smooth flyaways and frizzy bits with a lightweight oil, like Marula Oil Rare Oil Treatment Light, which includes hydrating oleic acids and antioxidant-packed cold-pressed marula oil.

If: You Want to Take It Easy and Still Get Polished Results

Try: A next-wave mani/pedi

If you ask us, the best mani/pedi is one that you give yourself while binge-watching Netflix. Start by massaging a hydrating lotion like Desert Essence Perfect Pistachio Foot Repair Cream or Acure Moroccan Argan Oil into your feet, ankles, hands, and forearms. Replicate a high-gloss, long-lasting gel nail treatment with an at-home LED Lamp. (A spin with the Sensationail Gel Starter Kit takes about 25 minutes of time—perfect for watching an episode of The Mindy Project.) Or get a jump on spring’s washed-out color trend with one of Deborah Lippmann new shades, like the dusty mauve Like Dreamers Do, which was shown at Spring/Summer 2015 Badgley Mischka, Theory and Donna Karan shows. After polishing, protect your paint job—and nourish cuticles—by applying a touch of cuticle oil.

Drake covered Kanye West last night

Drake and Kanye West are making the most out of the unique fashion week/NBA All-Star weekend mash-up that's turned New York into the ultimate celebrity playground. After a two-day battle of one-upmanship, the fellow rap gods finally joined forces Friday, during Drake's ultra-intimate, ultra-exclusive concert at Irving Plaza, where he performed cuts off his brand new mixtape If You're Reading This It's Too Late. First, West joined Drake on stage to perform his blistering verse from "Don't Like," after which Ye bequeathed Drizzy with a shiny new pair of Yeezy Boosts.

And that wasn't even the show's high point.

"Kanye West, that's like a mentor to me," Drake told the crowd after West left the stage.  "He's one of the greatest artists. Period, in life. He's got this song I really like." That's when rapper Drake morphed into singer Drake, to cover West's latest hits "Only One" and "FourFiveSeconds". So yeah, New York City is like, really fun right now.

Check out the highlights below.

the 35 best street style looks at nyfw, day two

The second day of Fashion Week has some of our favorites: Wes Gordon's incredible offerings for tropical business ladies; Cushnie Et Ochs ladylike technowear, and Chromat's super-sexy lingerie for a dystopian future. But, as usual, the real fashion is how those who brave the cold manage to turn it out without becoming small, stylish popsicles. We hunted some of our favorite looks all over town, from our spot at Made Fashion Week at Milk Studios, to the tents, to offshoots (like at Suno, where the well-heeled turned out in droves). So, just because it is below freezing (and very, very windy) doesn't mean that it has to be all full body puffers. Or, if it does, at least those full body puffers look rad.

Check out our day one street style finds, too!

bored of your cat-eye? try this block-eye

Backstage at Suno's NYFW Fall/Winter 2015 show, makeup artist Alice Lane was making us forget everything we thought we knew about eyeliner. Using Maybelline's new Eye Studio Master Graphic, a marker-like liquid eyeliner, she created solid rectangles at the corner of each model's eye. The effect was striking, like a more geometric, futuristic cat-eye. "Think of this makeup like an accesory," Lane said. "Like you're putting on a pair of really cool sunglasses."

The color-blocked liner look (or block-eye, as we've decided to call it) is surprisingly easy to recreate, especially using this specific eyeliner: The shape of the felt tip allows you to draw a super-bold, precise line with one swipe. "Make like you are drawing a cat-eye but only start pressing down when you get to where the flick would be," Lane instructs. "Then draw straight outwards." Worried a look so modern wouldn't be flattering? Lane says it's actually a shape that looks cool on most people, including herself: "I tried it on myself first, because I knew if it looked good on me, it's going to work on a 19-year-old beauty. If it looks like crap on me than we're in trouble."

chromat is changing the future of fashion

On Friday night, MADE Fashion Week showcased a runway far different from anything going on uptown: The Chromat show at Milk Studios featured models of all races, sizes, and gender identities strutting in the fiercest and most futuristic lingerie imaginable. Designer Becca McCharen uses 3D-printing techology to create architectural harnesses, bras, and garments that complement and accentuate all bodies, making for fashion that's as democratic as it is empowering.

McCharen turns her philosophy into a product that stays true to her values by casting diverse models for her runway instead of just using them in campagins or as inspiration. For the up-and-coming designer, technology is the key to a more diverse and representative fashion world—not just by helping to make clothing for all genders and sizes, but also by increasing the accessibility and attainability of high fashion.

Becca McCharen's designs have already made a major impact in the fashion world, even appearing on the VMA stage worn by Beyoncé's backup dancers. As evidenced by last night's show, her groundbreaking work continues to help her pave the way for the future of fashion. We spoke to her backstage at the Chromat show about 3D printing, the Chromat woman, and the importance of self-love.

Why do you think it’s important to have diverse models on the runway?

"I feel like casting for runway is a really great way to tell a story of who the Chromat woman is. Obviously the Chromat woman is so many people—it’s strong, powerful women in every different way. You don’t have to be skinny, white, and blonde to be powerful and amazing. That’s something that we really hold true. It’s beyond diverse—all the different varieties of plus-size, body size, gender—everything needs to be celebrated and we’re just like that celebration of strong, powerful women in every form."

How can the Chromat woman wear these pieces outside of the bedroom and into the world?

"A lot of our bras are so interesting, and bigger, longline styles, so a lot of people layer them over dresses. It’s really a layering piece, an accessory like a belt. I’m looking forward to the party where everyone’s wearing Chromat."

Do you think that the concept of strong women goes hand-in-hand with lingerie? Lingerie seems like a very empowering thing.

"Totally. It’s like a secret strength. When you know it's underneath, only you know what’s going on. It definitely gives you that confidence."

How do you think that the ideas of technology and strong, diverse women interact?

"I think technology is definitely a way for us to enhance and augment our bodies. With 3D printing, I really feel like it is the MP3 of fashion—like how MP3’s changed music where you can just hack anything and it can be yours, I feel like with 3D printing in the future, all those files for all those clothes will be online and you’ll be able to hack the latest Givenchy collection, download it, apply it to your body, scan and print it out. I really feel like technology is a way to get us to a more democratic place. Everyone has the power to hack."

Does technology make it easier to produce things?

"It’s ironic because now 3D printing is like, we can print things but we still have to hand-stitch. No matter what technology does, we’re never going to lose the handcraft. We’re never going to lose people completely. It’s never going to be all automated. Someone still has to be pushing the buttons of the machines. I just think it’s new tools and not a way to replace humans."

Do you see 3D tech getting more popular with fashion?

"Yeah, I think so. I think the biggest challenge of 3D printing now is flexibility, producing soft supple fabrics that move. But once we get to that level I’m really excited for the next step."

How do you strike a balance between creating wearable tech and wearable art?

"I think most times we’re not thinking about wearability when we start our concept and then we sort of boil it down to that level of the body. We take the high concept and then apply it."

Do you have any Valentine’s Day tips?

"Can I just quote RuPaul? 'If you can’t love yourself how the hell are you going to love someone else?' It’s all about you and finding what makes you feel happy and what makes you feel strong."

Any tips on finding the strong woman inside of you?

"Find something you love doing and do it a lot."

Benedict Cumberbatch + Sophie Hunter got married

Men all over the world were collectively shaking their heads in defeat Saturday, as details of Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter's wedding emerged. With the reportedly storybook Valentine's Day nuptials, Cumberbatch didn't just change the romance game — he flat out obliterated it.

The small ceremony unfolded at the kind of venue that only exists in Jane Austen novels, a medieval church nestled in England's bucolic countryside. According to People magazine, St. Peter and St. Paul's Church in Mottistone, on the Isle of Wight, is "maintained by the National Trust and was first mentioned in the Domesday Book, which was completed in 1068." Some parts of the site are said to date all the way back to the 15th century, the magazine added.

It's been a whirlwind romance for the couple, who became engaged last November, and announced that they were expecting their first child together soon after. Turner — a theater director — is said to have close ties to the area, which for all intents and purposes sounds a lot prettier than where I intend on spending my Valentine's day: The bottom of a bottle.

Anyways, congrats you two.

If Los Angeles feels particularly empty Sunday, that's because every celebrity ever fled the west coast's perfect weather for the sub-zero tundra that is New York City, officially making Lorne Michaels the most powerful man in showbiz. Tonight is Saturday Night Live's 40th anniversary spectacular, and somehow Michaels has managed to wrangle a guest list that rivals next week's Oscars in sheer star power. Seriously. Try and name a star that isn't going to be there. Even *NSYNC is going to be there (possibly reuniting). And while we're obviously excited to see the likes of Justin Timberlake and Jim Carrey grace studio 8H's hallowed stage for the bazillionth time, the real spectacle will be seeing Eddie Murphy return to the show that made him a star for the first time since leaving nearly four decades ago. SNL 40 airs Sunday night at 7 p.m. EST on NBC, so set those DVRs.

a nyfw beauty look we want to copy asap

$

0
As a general rule, runway beauty looks aren't meant to be replicated literally: A little inspiration here, a hot tip there, sure—but rarely do we see a full hair/makeup/nail situation that we want to copy in its entirety. That is, with the exception of shows like Mara Hoffman, where every element of the beauty look was so on-point, we'll probably be wearing it like, tomorrow.

The inspiration was a sci-fi desert with some early '70s influence—like Star Wars set at Burning Man—making it appealing to nerds and boho chicks alike. Hairstylist Thomas Osborn for Catwalk by Tigi used hair extensions to create braided headbands like whimsical wreaths around the models' heads. He then wove two messy braids that fell like "elevated rat tails" down their backs. The overall effect was like your hair on the last day of Bonaroo—if you did a braid crown on day one and then didn't shower after that (in a good way).

As for the makeup? Makeup artist Lottie for Maybelline created just about the coolest smoky eye we've ever seen. She filled in the entire eyelid, the lower lid, and the waterlines with a smudgy gray eyeliner, and then applied a metallic cream eyeshadow in the center of the top eyelid. That same cream eyeshadow was used as a highlighter on the high points of the models' faces, and the whole look was finished with a ton of bronzer for a sun-kissed, desert-babe vibe.

Finally, the nails, created using Zoya, represented a desert sunset, with freely drawn layers of wavy bronze hues. Click through to see more pictures from backstage, and weigh in if you're as inspired as we are.

We loved the looks day three of NYFW gave us (Tibi's muted designs, Alexander Wang's goth vibes, Mara Hoffman's colorful wonderland and amazing beauty look, everything Altuzarra...), but since we have to wait until the fall, we've been looking to the girls outside the tents and Made Fashion Week for some instant style inspiration. And, as always, the cold didn't stop showgoers from turning up in some seriously stylish looks that are, for the most part, actually warm. Today is... Ed Sheeran's 23rd birthday! What a great excuse to listen to x all day long.

News of the Day:

+ It's freezing out, but Sufjan Stevens has a new song that will thaw your frozen heart. "No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross" is the first single off his forthcoming album Carrie & Lowell due out on March 31.

+ If you're going to be stranded in an abandoned ghost town, at least be decked out in the latest Lazy Oaf. The British clothing brand released a video for the new Spring 2015 collection and it's anything but trashy.

+ As if Björk couldn't get any more magical, the Icelandic singer released the trailer for her short film "Black Lake" following the release of her critically acclaimed album Vulnicura. A collab with filmmaker Andrew Thonas Huang, the video is a preview for her upcoming MoMA exhibit launching on March 8.

+ Canadian cutie Ryan Hemsworth is making big moves with the first showcase for his low-key side project Secret Songs at SXSW on Feb. 20th. It feels like yesterday when we were alone in a room with the producer and a bunch of puppies...

+ French-Cuban twin sister-duo Ibeyi released their self-titled debut album off XL Recordings this week and it's the music your soul has been craving.

+ You finally have your chance to be like mega-babe Liv Tyler for a day—Rough Trade NYC is posing as Empire Records for the film's 20th Anniversary on April 8 a.k.a. Rex Manning Day! Cop your tickets here.

+ Want to live forever ever? This 115-year-old woman from Italy credits her longevity to her status as a single lady...and eating eggs!

Advice of the Day:

"Fashion's important to me, but beauty fades. All that stuff is fun while it lasts, but anything can happen tomorrow. You've got to have so much more about you than the way you look or your clothes."—FKA twigs

Deal of the Day:

This amazing Kim Tears pin from Pintrill will give you a reason to have something in your eye, and it won't be from walking outside in negative degree winds! You'd think this would have broken the internet already considering it's only $18, but there are only a limited amount available so get 'em now before they're gone.

song premiere: gosh pith "prints"

With a keen ability to mesh together a seemingly random sounds (ranging from classic pop structures to modern underground hip hop tunes), songwriting duo Gosh Pith has quickly earned a name in the indie blogosphere. And given their latest release, "Prints," it seems like they'll be a main fixture there for a while.

Josh Freed and Josh Smith spontaneously formed Gosh Pith after taking a psychedelic stroll through the streets of Paris. Their atypical inception is the basis of their sound: experimental "cosmic-trap" that's both refreshing and a little familiar (they list Otis Redding, Outkast, and Little Richard as some of their influences). The Detroit-based duo's latest single “Prints,” is a clear departure from their synth-heavy, Hype Machine hit “Window.” With its contagious beat, driving bass, and guitar hooks, the track pretty much guarantees a foot-stomping good time.

Gosh Pith will release their new EP in the next few months, but in the meantime, feel free to play "Prints" on loop. We know we will.

With Miley Cyrus' porn festival submissions, Art Basel antics, and dating life, it's easy to forget she's also one of the most talented singers in the industry. Last night on Saturday Night Live's 40th anniversary special, her subdued (by her standards) cover of Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" was a reminder of that. The song, performed as a tribute to Simon, showcased Cyrus' rich vocals and country music background. Cyrus, who's covered Dolly Parton's "Jolene" and Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" in the past, seems at her most mature when she's covering other people's music. Either way, it's hard to imagine her going back to twerking and midgets after a performance like this.

Luckily for us, that means that we have some more real-life winter style inspiration from outside Made Fashion Week at Milk Studios and various show venues around town. (Score!) things are looking blue for kim and kanye

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are in the business of making headlines, and at this point all they need to do is wear creepy, matching colored contacts to get people to write about them. Hence, this article, which is about the fact that last night at SNL's 40th anniversary special (#SNL40), Kim and Kanye wore matching blue contacts because fashion/art/statements (or whatever). West most likely wore his for his performance of "Wolves," the moody first song off his upcoming album that features Sia and Vic Mensa, who both joined him onstage, or his "Jesus Walks" performance which had him on his back, staring at the camera. Wolves are known to possess the kind of electric blue eyes that Kanye wore last night, so, mystery solved. Why did Kim wear them? So she could take this selfie, obviously. Stare at this for hours and have nightmares accordingly.

Today, singer-songwriter Lesley Gore passed away from cancer at the age of 68. After being discovered by Quincy Jones as a teenager, she was signed to Mercury Records, where she produced "It's My Party." Her music, especially "You Don't Own Me," brought feminist ideals to dance parties across the country. Gore was also a fervent LGBTQ activist.

To celebrate her life, we'll be blasting "You Don't Own Me" and singing in the mirror. Because that's what Gore would have wanted.

lady gaga is engaged to taylor kinney

Lady Gaga has, despite her on-stage antics and love of fashion, managed to keep a some sort of privacy about her personal life. She has adamantly stated that it isn't that hard to keep a low profile when you want—you just have to pay for it. So her relationship with Taylor Kinney, the star of Chicago Fire whom she met filming the video for "Yoü And I**" hasn't been the full-blown affair that we've come to associate with Gaga. However, their relationship—or at least what we see of it—has always been hopelessly charming, with Gaga going into hearts-as-eyes, nesting mode whenever she talks about him.

Today, she tweeted, "He gave me his heart on Valentine's Day, and I said YES!" and posted a photo of a massive heart-shaped engagement ring on Instagram. If you think that sounds surprisingly traditional, Gaga has spoken about how she is totally okay with being "submissive" to Kinney (or at least embracing her domestic side.), “Oh yeah, he’s totally in charge. When I’m home, I’m like, shoes are off, I’m making him dinner. He has a job too and he’s really busy," she said

For a gal as wild and emotive as Gaga, it is wonderful to see her matched with someone who seems to love the heck out of her.

8 best picture winners that shouldn't have won

Being the best is incredibly subjective, particularly when it comes to art. But each year, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences insists on crowning one movie the best of the year at an annual ceremony known as the Oscars (you may have heard of it). But does the Academy—a group of over 6,000 movie professionals—always get it right? The answer is no, they do not, at least in our humble opinion. Sometimes, their so-called Best Picture winner isn't the best picture at all, and another movie in that category being more deserving. Here, we take a look at eight times the Academy messed up.

How Green Is My Valley (1941)
We haven’t seen this story of a coal mining family set in a Welsh village, but it not only beat the Humphrey Bogart gumshoe classic, The Maltese Falcon, it also beat Orson Welles’ paean to capitalism and unbridled ambition, Citizen Kane—otherwise known as the greatest American film ever made.

Crash (2004)
Crash was a hard-hitting drama that doubled as a saccharine morality play, and with its colliding story lines and occasional gut punches, it had moments of raw power. But Brokeback Mountain, which it upset, was straight-up revolutionary. The fact that director Paul Haggis hasn’t made a movie of consequence since is also telling.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)
When this period romance upset Saving Private Ryan, it immediately became one of the biggest surprises in Oscar history. Ryan had Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and the most realistic war reenactments ever put to screen on its side, but Shakespeare in Love had the unstoppable force known as Harvey Weinstein, who that proved himself king of the Oscar campaign.

Driving Miss Daisy (1989)
It’s bad enough that this perfectly fine weepie beat searing and bold dramas like Dead Poets Society, My Left Foot, and Born on the Fourth of July—all of which hold up, by the way—but Driving Miss Daisy wasn’t even the most prescient film on race relations to come out that year. Spike Lee’s instant classic Do the Right Thing wasn’t even nominated.

Forrest Gump (1994)
We love Forrest Gump. It is a great, great movie. But Pulp Fiction was a flat-out, indisputable game-changer that is as thrilling to watch today as it was back then.

A Beautiful Mind (2001)
When was the last time someone you know watched this overly sentimental and safe biopic? Our point exactly.

The King’s Speech (2010)
A classic case of a dark horse overtaking a favorite in the eleventh hour, this inspirational but fairly standard biopic beat The Social Network, one of the more zeitgeist-y Oscar favorites in recent memory. Just when you thought the Academy was going to make a bid for relevance, they go with the safe bet. This one had Harvey Weinstein written all over it.

Dances With Wolves (1990)
Martin Scorsese, arguably the greatest living American director, made arguably his greatest film ever with the sprawling, virtuoso gangster saga Goodfellas. How then, did Kevin Costner, making his directorial debut, beat him? Your guess is as good as ours.

video premiere: leisure cruise "the getaway"

Most of us remember Hurricane Sandy as a disaster that left New York City ravaged, but the silver lining through it all proves to be Leisure Cruise—a two-man band featuring Dave Hodge (Broken Social Scene, Bran Van 3000) and Leah Siegel (Firehorse). After a chance meeting during the aftermath of the storm, the duo joined forces and formed a rather unique musical aesthetic for Leisure Cruise.

Hodge and Siegel imagined what it would be like to leave earth and move to another planet—but that's not to say their sound is dark and gloomy. The band's sound is bold, characterized by heavy synth and electronic influences. Siegel's slightly husky croon adds a depth and layers of excitement, melancholy, and determination to their songs, mirroring Hodge and Siegel's hypothetical inspiration of a "final leisure cruise for the human race."

Check out a Q&A with the band and watch their video below:

Your music is meant to be a soundtrack for "a final leisure cruise for the human race" before they have to go colonize a new planet. In what ways does this hypothetical situation influence your sound? Do you believe it allows more freedom and creativity because you're not writing about something we all know concretely?
When we imagined leaving the planet as a cure-all for the world's problems, "escapism" was at the top of our list. Beyond that, it's a real adventure that the human race could possibly face. Scientists have been looking for a viable mirror earth for a few decades and when they found a few extra thousand in 2013 we got excited, and it fueled a bunch of writing. But ultimately that writing is still about very earthly themes. "Don't give up" "Keep going" "Carry on" "Dance and feel better" "Acceptance." The human experience is still very likely the human experience even if it's relocated to another solar system. The search for peace and joy remains just as elusive.

You work with some really amazing artists on your album. How was it to get all those different musicians and their sounds influencing your music?
An honor. They are brilliant on the record and brilliant in life and we're grateful to call them friends and collaborators.

If we actually had to leave earth to colonize a new planet and you could only bring three records each, which would they be?
That's an impossible decision. But we'll try. With the understanding that our fellow passengers would have music on them as well.  And without thinking too hard -
Leah:  LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening; Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden; Robyn -  Body Talk

Dave:  Marvin Gaye - What's Going On (essential for the soul); Linton Kwesi Johnson - Independant Intavenshan (he's incredible..and his band...! Love.); deadmau5 - While (1<2) (just cuz I've been digging that record so hard lately for all it's variety and                   great production. And I might sneak some gorillaz and led zeppelin and David Bowie in my back pocket... ;)
