15 westminster dogs who got TURNT last night

$

Sure, it's NYFW, but you know what else happened? The Westminster Dog Show, that's what. And we were actually there for it, befriending every wet-nosed critter we could: From the majestically enormous, mop-like creatures to the elegant, agile pups with crazy-small ears. All reports confirm that most of the dogs had a good time, too: There were new smells to be experienced, treats to be rewarded with, and skills to show off. One might even say that these dogs were turnt up.

Click through to see these floppy angels as they noodle around, competing for Best In Show, and stay turned for our video in which we interview all of them, except the ones who very literally turned their noses up at us.

patti smith interviewed kristen stewart and it was beautiful

How do you get the notoriously press-shy Kristen Stewart to open up to a journalist? If you're Interview magazine, you make that journalist Patti Smith, AKA the coolest human being alive.

Smith, who once said she'd love to see Stewart play her in a planned adaption of her memoir Just Kids, interviewed the actress for Interview's Spring fashion issue. She spends most of the interview asking Stewart deep questions about her work and the artistic process, avoiding more gotcha topics like Stewart's well-documented disdain for fame and her even more well-documented love life. These are two serious artists talking seriously about art. You can read some of the highlights below, and click through the gallery to see the rest of the neon-lit, Steven Klein-shot pics.

She’s cool with you talking smack about Twilight: “Anybody who wants to talk shit about Twilight, I completely get it, but there's something there that I'm endlessly, and to this day, fucking proud of. My memory of it felt—still feels—really good.

She’s shared her writing with Patti Smith: (Smith speaking) “But the thing is, you are good at what you do, but you're young. You have lots of ideas. You've let me read some of your writing—your ideas are good.”

Her favorite part of acting is not acting: “It's funny because all that shit is what I like most. [laughs] I love that feeling, sitting around on set and being like, "Ugh, it's another fucking four hours until we can go do what we've been planning to do for months."

She’s a multidisciplinary artist: “I'm writing a poem for the wedding of one of my best friends. And that's oddly taken up a lot of me, recently. I'm trying to develop a little more faith in my hand, because everything that I do in terms of productivity is always really cerebral. So I've made a few paintings. I'm trying to find a crew, too, because I really want to start making my own movies. I just need to find my guys. I need to find a DP, most importantly. I have a couple of producers who are helping me with that. You read my short.”

how to copy nyfw's coolest beauty situations

$

Runway beauty looks might appear complicated, but usually they're really simple—which makes sense, considering backstage at Fashion Week is all about getting the models in and out of the chairs as quickly and efficiently as possible. Here, we take our favorite looks and spill the secrets for how to copy them. They may be bolder than you're used to, but that's what makes them so great. Hey, you only live once, right?

Backstage at Karen Walker, Sephora Pro makeup artist Benjamin Puckey proved that for a killer smoky eye, you only need two bold colors. He used brown and blue, creating a fashion-peacock vibe that was at once '60s-influenced and futuristic. Copying it is simple, if you know the tricks: Puckey layered eyeshadow on top of eyeliner in order to get the color to really pop. He applied Sephora's Contour Eyepencil 12hr Wear Waterproof in Cocoa to the outer corner of the eyes, and then put Sephora's Tiramisu eyeshadow over it. Then, he applied Urban Decay's Gonzo Eyeshadow from the Electric Pressed Pigment Palette around the inner corners of the eyes. Using a clean blending brush, he buffed the two colors together, and then extended the pigment into the exaggerated cat-eye shape you see here.

Screw a natural-looking bold brow: Go big or go home, right? Rather than being delicate with a brow gel, use grease paint and really have fun with broad strokes. Also, using an actual paintbrush (like, from a $.99 store) will help you get those broad, messy lines. The idea is that is should look like eyebrows from far away but have that kind of Blade Runner feel, which is coincidentally where head Maybelline artist Yadim Carranza got his inspiration.

The perfect burgundy lip is in the eye of the beholder—and the lip of the wearer. To get the exact-right moody wine shade for your pout, steal a page from Sarah Lucero, Stila's Global Director of Creative Artistry. Backstage at Alice + Olivia, she layered Stila's Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Fiery, a matte red, underneath Stay All Day Vinyl Lip Gloss in Merlot, a black-based pink gloss. "This adds that kind of lacquer finish, but the red underneath gives it the pop," she explains. Adjust the amount of gloss over the matte red to control the depth of the color until you get the perfect shade.

To complement the high necklines in Wes collection at Made Fashion Week, L'Oreal hairstylist Syd Hayes created a grungy, undone bun. To get the look, work a mousse through your wet hair and then blow dry it. Then apply L'Oreal Mythic Oil Milk to give your hair a slightly greasy look. Create a center part, and then throw your hair into a ponytail with a regular black hair band. Instead of pulling it all the way through, though, loop it over itself (leaving the hair band exposed). Pin it in place, leaving the tail flipped out. The whole style can be done in under five minutes—it doesn't get much better than that.

Another amazing Made Fashion Week designer, Webb's styling proved once and for all that elegant updos don't need to be perfect—nor time consuming. TRESemmé hairstylist Jeanie Syfu whipped up this braided chignon on a load of gals before the show. First, she prepped wet hair with TRESemmé's Perfectly (un)Done Wave Creation Sea Foam, rough drying it and then creating a center part. After securing it into a ponytail, she divided the pony into two sections and then tied those sections into a knot. She braided what was left, fastening with an elastic and then wrapping the braid into a bun at the nape of the neck. If you can tie a knot, and braid your hair, you can do this—but no one has to know it was this easy.

We know you know how to put your hair into a ponytail, but how about this super-chic asymmetrical situation? Start by applying Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse from root-to-tip and then blowdry it straight (obviously skip this step if your hair is already straight). When it's mostly dry, work in some styling gel and then straighten it. Create a deep side part, and pull your hair into a ponytail at the nape of your neck, leaving a section in front loose. Then, simply mist with a hairspray and add a shine product like Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine to finish.

We've already sung the praises of this incredibly cool block-eye. To do it yourself, do as makeup artist Alice Lane did and use Maybelline's graphic liquid liner, which makes drawing thick, precise bold lines super easy—once you have that on hand, it's just a matter of placement. Trace a cat-eye over your lid but only actually press down when you get to where the flick would be. Then, draw a line extending outwards. It's the coolest take on our go-to liner look we've seen yet.

We don't necessarily have the steadiest of hands (thank you, coffee addiction) but that doesn't mean we don't like a little fancy nail art now and then. That's why we were so excited about this trick used backstage at Tadashi Shoji. Instead of trying to use the nail polish brush, use a sponge! To get this exact look, apply butter LONDON Nail Lacquer in Cotton Bud on the tip of your nail, fading the color up diagonally "like a cloud." Then, take the opposite side of the sponge, and apply butter LONDON Nail Lacquer in Full Monty (gold), softening any harsh lines and blending the gold and the white ever so slightly. Finish with a top coat to add some shine.

sixty shades of shade

Pop D-I-V-A Mariah Carey has commanded an ultra-high level of attention and respect since she first emerged on the scene. And although she has gone through career highs and lows, she's kept everyone in check by throwing shade left and right. Whether it's saying "I don't know her" when asked about a competitor, or even just saying she "doesn't care" for an elevator with poor lighting, Carey has brought a certain glamour (and glitter) to pop culture. We will forever be impacted by her contributions to the shade industry. After all, before her, it seemed like shade was just something under a tree.

video premiere: kid wave "wonderlust"

Grow out your hair, slip on your favorite pair of ripped jeans, and prep for an epic solo dance party in your bedroom—it's what London-based Kid Wave would want. Although there isn't much to their latest video, "Wonderlust," (the four-piece essentially just rock out), watching it will make you feel all warm and fuzzy. And you will start to uncontrollably sway your head from side to side. The song is emotionally gripping as Emmery's low voice rises behind the wave of crashing guitar chords. Similar to the nostalgic nature of their glam gloom sound, the video has a dated quality to it as the camera spins around in a hazy, faded out state.

Consisting of Lea Emmery, Serra Patale, Harry Deacon and Mattias Batt, the band originally comes from the likes of Sweden, Australia and London. With a steady following on the Internet over the past two years, enough sold-out shows in the U.K., and a cool label behind them (Heavenly Recordings), it's only a matter of time before all eyes are watching them.

Kid Wave's debut album Wanderlust is expected for release in June. Until then, we'll be playing this video and bobbing our heads non-stop. Follow the band on Soundcloud and Facebook.

premiere: phoebe ryan's "mine" remix featuring skizzy mars

You heard it hear first: Phoebe Ryan's "Mine" is going to be a hit. The hook is too big, the vocals too triumphant, the production too anthemic for it not to be. The L.A. based singer and songwriter—who first came to our attention with her heart-swelling cover of R. Kelly's "Ignition (Remix)"—recorded "Mine" as an ode to "fighting through a tough time and accepting the circumstances with strength and grace." Earlier today, Fader premiered the song's video. Now we're premiering producer Michael Keenan's booming remix of the track, which features a brand-new verse from rapper Skizzy Mars. We love the original, but this might—might—be better.

Reggie Watts is a man of many, many talents. He can beatbox, he can sing, he can upstage LCD Soundsystem, he can do stand up, and that's just scratching the surface. But as we're about to show you, the wild-haired performer can also do accents. In this exclusive video, Watts takes us on an autobiographical journey that took him from Germany, to Italy, to the States, and finally to his new gig as bandleader for CBS's new Late Late Show, starring James Corden. We'll be tuning in.

Rodarte's NYFW show—from the backstage beauty to the runway—provided some serious eye-candy for our souls. Sure, we love the edgier runways as much as the next girl, but when it comes to things that are just really pretty, we can't get enough. From bedazzled eyeliner to undone waves to rose-colored sunnies, it was romantic and ethereal without feeling cheesy or overdone.

Today is...
National Single Tasking Day. The first and only task of the day? To figure out exactly why this holiday exists.

News of the Day:
+
Pussy Riot released the video for their first English song, "I Can't Breathe." Of course, it's super cool, very morbid, and totally necessary; watch it here.
+ Taylor Swift and Kanye West went to dinner together last night. That is all.
+ If you thought all the editors running around sub-zero temperatures sans tights was bad, well, Jay Z would probably do the same. The rapper is now a street style star and clearly loving it.
+ Have you ever wondered what your favorite celebrities would look like if they were overweight? Oh, you haven't? Weird, because 20-year-old artist David Lopera photoshopped your favorite celebrities (Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Watson, Katy Perry, Rita Ora, and more) to look more full-figured. It's an interesting concept, but also raises a few issues: Why does it matter what these women weigh to begin with? And why are we all so fascinated with distorting others' body image?
+ Tom Ford is officially working on his second feature film. His directorial debut, A Single Man, was nominated for an Oscar.

Deal of the Day:

Advice of the Day:

song premiere: the vaccines "handsome reimagined (dave fridmann edit)"

For the most part, The Vaccines have been laying low since the release of 2012's Come of Age. But after what felt like ages, the British four-piece is back with what promises to be another boisterous rock staple. One month ago (to the day), they released "Handsome," the first single from their upcoming album, English Graffiti. Riding that wave (the song and its kung-fu video have been playing on constant loop at BBC One and just about everyone's personal music library), the group is releasing a special remix of the song by producer David Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, MGMT).

"For us it was really important that we didn't just release a b-side that was essentially a song not strong enough to make it on the record," says The Vaccines frontman Justin Young. "We felt like that approach could damage the feeling of cohesion and focus. There were so many 'Easter eggs' in the songs that weren't being heard. So we liked the idea of the producers of the record approaching the songs in exactly the way they would have done if we weren't there and essentially ending up with two songs out of one. And Dave's interpretation of 'Handsome' is the first of these."

The result is a fuzzier, more rebellious version of the throbbing pop rock original. It still maintains the anchoring bassline and foot-stomping hand claps, making this rendition read more like a live performance—one undoubtedly meant to be accompanied by a bevy of warm, foamy beers and picklebacks.

gigi hadid spills her beauty secrets

Gigi Hadid—teenage It girl, model, and fashion muse has just added Maybelline spokesperson to her already impressive dossier. Here, she spills her beauty secrets.

How did you become the new face of Maybelline? Who approached who?

I'd met a few people associated to Maybelline at photo shoots and events, which I guess would have started the conversation about me working with the brand. Then I went in for a meeting and that's where they really wanted to get to know me to make sure I would be the perfect Maybelline girl. After that my contract started to be discussed!

What’s your earliest memory of using Maybelline makeup?

I really started to wear makeup when I was in high school, and I remember Maybelline being all my girlfriends’ favorite makeup brand. I think the first Maybelline product I ever used was my best friend’s Super Stay 24 Hr Concealer—a product that I still use today—because who doesn’t have to cover up their pimples in 9th grade…and after?!

What’s your all-time favorite, cult Maybelline product?

Super Stay 24 Hr Concealer.

What’s your favorite product that’s new from the brand?

The Nudes Palette. It’s the best, seriously.

What’s the best and worst beauty advice your mom [Yolanda Foster] has ever given you?

My mom mostly taught me about taking care of my skin, especially protecting it from sun-damage. One thing we used to do together when I was young was exfoliate our lips with a sugar scrub and a wet towel. I don't think she ever gave bad beauty advice; she didn't really want us wearing makeup when we were young but we were always playing with her hair stuff. I think she let us get a little too comfortable because one day I cut my own bangs, and it happened to be the day before one of my Baby Guess campaigns...oops!

What’s your biggest beauty secret you’ve learned in the industry?

I think just being able to watch different makeup artists’ techniques; I've really learned how to do my own makeup through them.

Any beauty advice you can pass on to our readers?

Keeping your skin healthy is the most important thing. Just having that natural glow is better than any makeup can do for you.

Who’s your ultimate beauty icon?

Candice Swanepoel because I think she does a really great job of letting the makeup show off her face rather than take it over.

What beauty advice have you passed down to your sister Bella?

I do her makeup for her sometimes, and she always asks for makeup tips.

Anything else exciting brewing for 2015?

There's a lot brewing for sure, but you'll have to wait to find out!!

allison williams breaks her silence about her father

It was bound to happen: Allison Williams, currently starring on season four of HBO's Girls, had yet to publicly comment on the shocking fall of her father, NBC news anchor Brian Williams. We figured she'd have to at some point, whether she was pestered on the red carpet or approached by a pesky reporter at some party. But remarkably, Williams found herself one-on-one with Seth Meyers for an interview at New York City's 92Y, so instead of addressing the scandal that has engulfed her father to some dude with a recorder, Williams broke her silence in front of a huge audience.

“One thing this experience has not done is shake my trust and belief in him as a man," a remarkably poised Williams said. "He’s a truthful man. He has so much integrity. He cares so much about journalism. And yes, he’s a really good dad, but I know you can trust him because, as any good daughter does, I have tested him on that.” Watch the exchange in its entirety below.

chvrches covers "cry me a river"

Sometimes, waiting for our favorite artists to create new music is akin to waiting for a burger after a Tracy Anderson class. You want it so badly, but it's never ready fast enough. This morning, The Vaccines released a new song and now, one of our other favorite Brit bands CHVRCHES gave us a killer cover of Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River." So, yeah, we're feeling pretty satisfied at the moment.

Although the Scottish electro group hasn't released much original material aside from 2013's The Bones of What You Believe and the odd single ("Under the Tide," "We Sink," and their Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 song "Dead Air"), they have been busy reworking some classic songs. They've put their stamp on Whitney Houston's "It's Not Right But It's Okay," Lorde's "Team," and Arctic Monkeys' "Do I Wanna Know." For their Timberlake rendition, the group added their signature ominous tones, contrasted by Laura Mayberry's sweeter-than-Splenda vocals. Listen below.

talking 'house of cards' with robin wright

When season three of House of Cards suddenly leaked onto Netflix a couple of weeks ago, our immediate thought was, Awesome! We get to see Robin Wright reclaim her throne as the baddest bitch on TV! Then, those cruel Netflix overlords suddenly removed the entire season from the site, and now we're forced to wait, along with everyone else, for February 27 when the entire season drops for real. We caught up with Wright to talk about directing her first episode of the series, David Fincher's unusual process, and to get her take on what exactly is going on with the Underwoods.

Talk about making your directorial debut in season three.
I love it. I wanna keep doing it. I kinda want to stop acting. Not kidding. I’m such a control freak and that’s really the truth of it. And being in this business for almost 30 years, I’ve been biting my tongue for so many years on set.

Do you bite your tongue with David Fincher?
He does something different with me than what he does with everybody else and that’s why he’s a great director, because he picks up on the nuance of the person. That aura that you are versus you, and he knows how to get it out of you because it’s going to be different getting it out of you. He just yells out descriptive phrases and it works because he doesn’t call cut. “Don’t act, say it like this. Say it like you want to kill your mother. Say it like you’re about to fart.” He’ll just throw things out at me so fast that I don’t have time to think.

Do you see Claire as evil?
I don’t think she’s evil because I can’t think that. No way. She’s very diligent and divisive and decisive, and that’s all I need to think about. She gets the job done. It’s ends justifying the means, right? There is a mutual gain to be had for this empire Underwood and it’s an enterprise. They’re going to have a competitor. They’re going to have roadblocks, so if those roadblocks are in the way, we try to get around it. That’s Machiavellian, that’s The Art of War, and somebody has to lose if someone is going to win.

How do you explain Claire turning against him the way she does?
There’s an agreement and it’s an addendum to the contract of the nuptial they have, which is I do for you, you do for me. That’s how it goes. I do for you, I do for you, I do for you, and you don’t do for me? Okay, I’m going to go do for me in this way. That’s what happened in season one, and I think they understand that agreement. At the moment he got too big for his britches and his ego got the best of him and then she showed him that’s not okay. Mommy’s not happy.

Is it a lust for power, or is it just greed?
It’s about greed, and that is what you were talking about, you’re talking about what is the backdrop of politics. It is about greed and power because that’s the only way to get your fucking bill passed or something on the agenda, to get Obama to look at it. It’s evil and it’s corrupt and it’s venal.

How much of the show is drawn from Macbeth?
He’s not Macbeth in any shape or form because he never hesitates, he doesn’t have a doubt, and he’s not weaker than Lady Macbeth. The way it was displayed to us long before episode one was ever written in season one, it was you are Lady Macbeth to his Richard III. Period. The end. We are equals and we have deep, profound respect for one another. And they truly love each other. They do. Different kind of love but they do.

Do they get turned on by power?
Yeah, I think that’s sex for them.

Thanks to USA Network, we went backstage at The Westminster Dog Show, also known as the most pro-fur show of NYFW, and asked the puppies really important questions. They responded in turn with a thoughtful combination of wisdom, humor, insight, and kisses. At the end of the evening we were covered in fragrant dog drool, making it one of the most rewarding journalistic experiences of our lives. If there is one video you watch today, this may be it. Then, check out more photos of these glorious creatures being perfect.

Watch the video below to find out how these furry competitors feel about cultural appropriation (um, hello Riccardo Tisci!), what their favorite backstage beauty tricks are, and if they'd ever date fans.

Filled with unapologetic snarky graphics and vibrant colors, Lazy Oaf's spring collection is something of a hazy suburban daydream. Think minimalist skull print and pastel cartoons on the most flattering boxy crops and '90s-inspired silhouettes. As the British brand puts it, "Picture this, the Stepford Wives got so broke, ran away to art school, and drank a hella lot of dirty tinnies."

With both a fresh and retro feel, this collection will give our spring wardrobes just the right amount of bite. And it will help you serve up some major cool-kid-doodling-in-the-back-of-the-classroom vibes. Essentially, it's pastel-goth-meets-pop-art for a look that's equal parts apathetic art student and casual chic It girl.

throwback thursday: the stars of 'fifty shades' on nylon tv

Years ago, Dakota Johnson was the blonde star of the short-lived TV show Ben and Kate and Jamie Donan was a lesser-known Irish model and actor with small parts in Marie Antoinette and Once Upon A Time. But that doesn't mean that the up-and-coming actors weren't on our radar.

In two episodes of NYLON TV, one filmed with Johnson in 2012 and another with Dornan in 2009, we talked to the Fifty Shades stars pre-massive fame about their careers and their favorite junk foods—we're talking messy hamburgers, tacos, ribs, and Chinese food. Both on the brink of success, Dornan told us about his dream role (Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire) and Johnson confessed her hidden talent (girl can shoot a gun really well). Looking back at our interviews, it's clear that the two have always been super-grounded and super-talented.

Now that they've broken the box office, these two celebs are taking on bigger challenges and adventures—but we know they're still the same mellow actors we talked to years ago. Watch our interviews with the Fifty Shades stars below.

lady gaga is engaged to taylor kinney

This article was originally published on February 16 and has been updated.

Lady Gaga has, despite her on-stage antics and love of fashion, managed to keep a some sort of privacy about her personal life. She has adamantly stated that it isn't that hard to keep a low profile when you want—you just have to pay for it. So her relationship with Taylor Kinney, the star of Chicago Fire whom she met filming the video for "Yoü And I**" hasn't been the full-blown affair that we've come to associate with Gaga. However, their relationship—or at least what we see of it—has always been hopelessly charming, with Gaga going into hearts-as-eyes, nesting mode whenever she talks about him.

Monday, she tweeted, "He gave me his heart on Valentine's Day, and I said YES!" and posted a photo of a massive heart-shaped engagement ring on Instagram. And yesterday, she revealed even more about the ring. The diamond-encrusted band says "T <3 S," signifying "Taylor <3s Stefani" (Gaga's birth name is Stefani Germanotta). "He always called me by my birth name," Gaga captioned. "Since our very first date. I'm such a happy bride-to-be! I can't stop smiling!!"

If you think that sounds surprisingly traditional, Gaga has spoken about how she is totally okay with being "submissive" to Kinney (or at least embracing her domestic side.), “Oh yeah, he’s totally in charge. When I’m home, I’m like, shoes are off, I’m making him dinner. He has a job too and he’s really busy," she said

For a gal as wild and emotive as Gaga, it is wonderful to see her matched with someone who seems to love the heck out of her.

Most of fashion week consists of running to and from shows, ogling over gorgeous designs, and critiquing the validity of [insert semi-well known designer here]'s collection. If we're going to be honest, it's a total tease. Yes, editors get a first look at next season's designs so that we can start planning shoots and features (hence the initial purpose of the week-long event), but one can't actually shop the collection—which is painful if you see something you fall in love with. Luckily, though, there are now fast-fashion brands to help you recreate the look, stat. Plus, plenty of the styles are simple re-workings of classic wardrobe staples that you might already own.

Click through the gallery to see five of our favorite trends. Then, re-imagine them using your own closet (and our suggestions). It's a win-win.

Unless you grew up with a professional stylist, chances are that you have gone through your fair share of style snafus. (Hey, if anyone dug up our prom photos, they would see a whole lot of ill-conceived tulle.) And, as you've heard a thousand times before, celebrities are, indeed, just like us. But unfortunately for our favorite actors, musicians, and filmmakers, the beast that is the red carpet is forever captured by the shutter-loving paparazzi. That means that every little moment is cemented for the entire world to view, forget about...and then rediscover again.

With that in mind, we're celebrating 11 Oscar dresses that haven't aged all too great. The ladies who wore them, of course, are a whole different story, but sometimes you just wear a dress that isn't so classic. So click through the gallery, then revisit your own fashion regrets. And remember: Beauty may fade, but red carpet images last forever.
