No interior is complete without a candle to add some major ambience with a flickering light and irresistable scent. But not every candle is right for every space: Wax creations from mall superstores tend to overwhelm the senses and aren't the most visually pleasing, while blogger favorites can cost you upwards of $60 for just a few hours of a beautiful aroma. So, since every cool girl deserves a cool space, we've rounded up our favorite candles to take your home decorating to the next level.

Whether you prefer to get spiritual with prayer and ritual candles or you're looking for something dessert-sweet, these flickering picks will keep your space looking and smelling amazing. Grab your wallet and your lighter, and click through the gallery to find the hottest candles around.

what it was really like to live the 'hunger games'

$

0

The thing about The Hunger Games, something that fans of both the books and the movie completely understand, is that the series starts dark and just gets darker. The Battle Royale premise of kids fighting each other to the death ends up exploding a broken caste system and revealing government lies—which culminates underground in District 13, the forgotten, bombed-to-all-hell secret society in Panem.

But, the revelation of District 13 actually gives more texture to the Hunger Games world. The technology is a mix of futuristic and dated. The underground lair is a stark contrast to the open spaces of the previous films. And Katniss' mental state reflects the world around her—quickly falling apart.

This featurette, which features Julianne Moore, Jennifer Lawrence, and Elizabeth Banks (plus more) discussing the way in which they built the dark, strange world of Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, not only highlights the battle that Katniss has ahead of her, but what it was really like to live inside of District 13.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is available on Blu-Ray, DVD, and On-Demand March 6.

watch the twisty trailer for gillian flynn's 'dark places'

Before Gillian Flynn was the world famous bestselling author of Gone Girl, she published two other similarly twisty thrillers, Sharp Objects and Dark Places. The latter has been turned into a movie starring Charlize Theron as woman who witnesses the murder of her family at a young age, and revisits the crime when she's visited in the present day by a secret society that calls themselves the Kill Club. Nicholas Hoult leads the mysterious club of crime aficionados, and encourages Theron to question whether or not her brother committed the crime, as she told police after it happened. Chloe Grace Moretz and Christina Hendricks both show up as women with secret pasts, who no doubt are connected the murders somehow.

What's odd is that this trailer comes to us from France, where it'll be released on April 8. Dark Places has had no promotion here in the States, and has yet to land a North American release date, which makes no sense for a movie with Gillian Flynn and Charlize Theron's names attached to it. Could it be that it's just not very good? Not based on this very intriguing trailer, which you should watch below.

diy leg workouts for spring

Right now (in NYC at least) it's hard to imagine going outside without at least three layers on. But if you can take yourself back to SS15, you'll recall a slew of towering shoes, revealing skirts, and legs for days. We're technically on the brink of warmer times, though, and thanks to frontrunners like Tom Ford and Anthony Vaccarello, next season's look calls for skin from the waist down. Let's get this out of the way: Your legs are perfect as they are. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. But, in case you want to tone up your legs before they re-enter the world, we've compiled a list of foolproof leg workouts from celebrity trainer Lacey Stone to boost your confidence.

I tried these out at the super-affordable Blink Fitness with my trainer Alexis Fotiou and I'll shamelessly admit to feeling the burn in my quads mere minutes in. The best part about these leg workouts is they're free, can be done at home, and are noticeably effective (with proper repetition, of course). So whether you're doing them at home in front of Gaga on American Horror Story or to the tunes of Beyoncé at your own fitness center, they still count toward that spring wardrobe project you've been pinching pennies for all fall-winter.

Stability Ball Leg Curl
12 reps: Lie with your heels on a stability ball. Contract your abs and glutes, and lift your hips off the ground so your body forms a straight line. Bend your knees and roll the ball toward your hips. Pause, then extend your legs, keeping your hips lifted the entire time.

And to challenge yourself, do single-leg curls keeping the opposite leg raised up in the air.

Butt Bridge on a Medicine Ball
20 reps: Lie with your knees bent, with your feet on a medicine ball. Use your heels to dig into the ball for stability (knees bent and arms at your sides!). Tighten your abs and lift your hips off of the ground so your body forms a straight line from knees to shoulders. Keep your knees aligned while you lift and squeeze your glutes off the ground. Slowly lower your hips without touching ground.

Hands-Up Squat
15 reps: Stand with your feet more than shoulder-width apart and lace your fingers behind your head. Keeping your elbows back, bend at your hips and knees, and lower yourself until your thighs are almost parallel to the ground. Then press back to standing.

Lateral Lunge w/ a Kick
10 reps: Step your left foot to the side and sit your hips back to lower into a lateral lunge (keeping your chest upright). Press through your left heel to shift your weight back onto your right foot, extending your left leg into the air with a high kick. Reverse the movement, stepping back into a lateral lunge. That’s one rep! Complete all reps, then switch sides and repeat.

Inverted Leg Lift
25 reps: Place your hands on the floor with your hips raised and legs straight. Slowly raise your left leg out to the side—and in an arc—as far towards the ceiling as it will go for a count of three. Pause, then reverse to lower your leg. Done!

Feeling it yet? Don't forget: Practice makes perfect and there's no better time than the present.

band crush: XO

British producer XO is only 19, but he's already established himself as a rising star on the dance music scene, thanks to uptempo cuts like "Holdin' On." The Staffordshire-based producer, who was born Sunil Heera, has been a strong presence in the remix community for a while, but at the end of last year he branched off on his own and released his debut EP, Through the NightHis tracks, which borrow elements from dubstep (think James Blake kicked up a few notches), often feature guest vocalists that elevate them something more than just club fodder. Here, we get to know him a little better.

How would you describe your aesthetic?
Substance over style and Old Skool over Nu Skool for sure.

How did your career get started?
Just out of sheer curiosity, I guess. I was initially intrigued by the idea of making music from my own bedroom, and the rest is history as they say. Although, I never saw it as a career opportunity until I met my manager, Emma, so shout out to her.

What are you most proud of so far in terms of your career?
There’s a lot of proud moments for sure. Playing Radio 1’s Big Weekend and hosting my own two hour show on their R1 Dance station last year are definitely up there; receiving support from artists and radio DJs that I respect has also been overwhelming at times. Although, I think the proudest moment came when I released my debut EP Through the Night at the end of last year.

What famous person, dead or living, do most wish you could have as a roommate?
Probably someone like Seth Rogen. He’s the funniest dude.

What is your favorite driving music?
Anything with a kind of '80s feel just reminds me of driving a Cadillac with the top down through a picturesque area in the USA. Tracks that create a sense of nostalgia are always great to listen to when driving I’ve found.

Whose career would you most like to emulate?
I don’t know if I’d like to emulate someone else’s career exactly since everyone has their own artistic vision and direction. All I know is that I want to be remembered for leaving something special behind, as long as I can achieve that, I’ll die happy.

If you had to live in a past time, what do you think would be the most fun era and why?
'90s. Without a doubt. Although I was already born in that era, I’m not old enough to have experienced the decade in its entirety. It was just a great period of time for so many musical styles that I love and grew up listening to, including House, UK Garage and RnB.

How do you wind down before bed?
I can’t actually tell you that. I listen to downtempo music sometimes though.

What kind of person were you in high school?
I’d like to think I was one of the more popular guys. Approachable, confident, and just an all round sweetheart. My parents raised me well. I wasn’t very good at making music at the time though, embarrassingly awful in fact.

Do you have any phobias?
I hate spiders, heights, and tight spaces. Ughhhh.

If there was a phrase that you think best sums up your approach to life what might it be?
“F*ck it.”

watch cara delevingne in the trailer for the amanda knox film

Even though she's been busy making musicstarring in fashion campaigns, and getting cozy with the coolest celebs ever, Cara Delevingne has had another project on the side: becoming a movie star. The 22-year-old Brit has slowly but surely made her way onto the big screen, first with a small part in 2012's Anna Karenina and most recently as the star of the latest John Green novel to be adapted, Paper Towns. Now, the bold-brow icon is back in a motion picture that looks just as dramatic as the true story that inspired it.

The Face of An Angel is a fictionalized film loosely based on the Amanda Knox case, in which a group of reporters and filmmakers tries to make major bank by digging deep into the controversial case of an British student's murder by her American flatmate while studying in Italy. Delevingne plays a student tour guide named Melanie who helps the writers and film crews as they investigate and cash in on the mystery. The psychological thriller also stars Kate Beckinsale and Daniel Brühl.

The film hits American theaters in June but will be released in the UK on March 27. Watch the trailer below.

Today is...

National Frozen Food Day! Bring on the frozen pizza and ice cream.

News of the Day:

+ We may not know who's replacing Jon Stewart on The Daily Show yet, but TBS announced that it has nabbed the ever-witty Samatha Bee to star in her own satirical show.

+ Your go-to salad spot sweetgreen sure knows how to throw a music festival. The sweetlife festival will take place on May 30 and 31 in Columbia, Maryland, and feature performers like Charlie XCX, Kendrick Lamar, Tove Lo, and more.

+ Is Hannah Horvath in need of Olivia Pope's help? Probably—but to be sure, you'll have to wait for Lena Dunham's guest appearence on Scandal, airing March 19. In the meantime, check out these exclusive photos of her on-set and in costume.

+ A live-action Barbie film is in the works, and Juno writer Diablo Cody has been recruited to save it after its first draft failed.

We may be seeing more of the Obvious Child star soon as FX considers Jenny Slate for her own pilot.

Deal of the Day:

The weather outside is frightful, but you can still get 20% off new spring clothes at ASOS. Score!

Advice of the Day:

"I think we’ve all had situations where we thought it was the end of the world when you have a break up but then you think, okay, where do I go from here? I can’t wallow in this for too long. You’ve got to pick yourself up and figure out what it is you can learn from it and move on." - Lily Collins

your first look at lena dunham on 'scandal'

Remember when we told you that Lena Dunham was going to fulfill her lifelong dream and guest star on Scandal? That was not a lie—and now there are pictures to prove it. Dunham posted a smoochy photo on her Instagram of her and Scandal star Kerry Washington with the caption: “Finally at liberty to reveal this pic of me on the #scandalset as ‘Kinky Sue’ with my true ❤️ @kerrywashington.” But the real takeaway here is Dunham's long, straight wig and ample bangs. It's kind of the opposite of Hannah Horvath hair: prim, professional, and decidedly unhip.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, who has a small cache of exclusive pics of Dunham in action, the episode is called "It's Good to Be Kink," and centers on a woman who's mission is to expose the dirty secrets of Washington's elite. While there's no official confirmation, it seems likely that woman will be played by Dunham. The episode airs March 19, and you can bet we'll be there.

true romance: we met at whole foods

Welcome to True Romance, our brand-new series of awww-inducing love stories. Don't worry, though, these essays won't make you gag: We're all about the real talk when it comes to finding your person. Here, you'll find honest, funny, surprising, touching, moving stories—because at the end of the day, who doesn't want to talk about love?

"Wow. He's really cute. I could go sit by him."

That’s what I remember thinking as I checked out at the Columbus Circle Whole Foods in Manhattan on March 1st, 2006. I was seventeen years old, and grabbing lunch after an audition before heading back to my high school, which was a block away (yes, I was a teen actress…but that's a story for another day). It was two in the afternoon, and I was starving. I scanned the seating area to find a spot to inhale two large slabs of pizza and a small soup when my life changed forever.

A handsome stranger sat at a long communal table, bent over a salad, munching away. I remember that his wavy brown hair was slightly disheveled. Already, I was riveted. Yes, he was good-looking, but it was more than that. It was like there was a spotlight on him, and I was a moth drawn to the light.

In case I haven't already made it embarrassingly clear: I fell in love at first sight.

What's that you say? You don't think that love at first sight is a real thing? Well, neither did I. Despite the fact that I grew up as a boy-crazy romantic, but I wasn’t as naive about love as one might think. I had grown to understand that love was something cultivated over time; that love was beautiful but hard; something you worked for. Love didn’t fall in your lap in a Whole Foods one Wednesday as you stuffed your face with overpriced pizza. That would be crazy.

As I paid for my food, I debated whether I had the balls to go sit by this guy. For a minute, I doubted myself. Would I seem desperate? Was this outfit really lame? (There were Ugg boots involved.) I made a decision: I would go sit in the general vicinity of Handsome Stranger—at the other end of the table—and, I would ignore him. Genius!

I sat down, and demurely started sipping my soup—ignoring the two huge slices of pizza I had bought to go with them. I took out some light reading (from Earth Science class!) so I would seem very busy, and very intellectual. I ignored handsome stranger. And then...

Do you remember when Abercrombie and Fitch was in its heyday, and it would send sales associates around malls to find other young people to sell their special brand of moose-adorned sportswear and nausea-inducing cologne? Well, I'm afraid to say, the next step of my big love story is contingent on that very mecca of pseudo-preppy duds. A couple of A&F girls approached Handsome Stranger and told him that they liked his style. They asked if he wanted to work at the new Abercrombie and Fitch location on Fifth Avenue. He politely declined, stating that he was already gainfully employed (swoon!).

I was still pretending to be absorbed by my worksheet on rock formations, until the girls turned to me and asked if I might be interested in a job. "No thanks," I flippantly replied. "I'm a student and an actress."

The girls shrugged and giggled, and inexplicably said: "Well, now you two have something to talk about!"

Handsome Stranger turned to me and laughed, and admitted that he had, in fact, worked at an Abercrombie and Fitch in high school (in the stock room, so he didn't have to wear the clothes, he was quick to point out). We chatted. We laughed. I noticed that he had the deepest blue eyes that I had ever seen.

When he left, my heart sank. He gave me his business card, telling me that he'd love to get my feedback on a new website for the company he had just launched. As he walked away, we each looked back and smiled. What the heck had just happened?

I din't know in that moment that I had met the man that I would marry on a June evening five years later. But that didn't stop me from basically skipping down 60th Street back to school, certain that the new lightness in my heart could lift my feet clear off the ground.

Did I love him the way that I love him today, nine years to the day since March 1st, 2006, after experiencing all of the messy, tender chaos that is trying to make a life with another human being? Certainly not. But I still recognize that same soaring feeling in my seventeen-year-old heart when he looks at me. I can tell you without a doubt that the feeling I felt that day was the first assertive spark of what I can only hope will be a love that burns steadily for many more decades.

There is really nothing about love that is logical. If you can forget your common sense, though, and maybe even channel your fearless teenage self, it will take you on one wild, beautiful ride.

do you need a luxury hand sanitizer?

At some point in your life, you've heard your parents use the old "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" (or "Don't fix it if it ain't broke," depending on where you're from) mantra. While this age-old saying obviously still applies to pretty much everything today, there's no rule that says you can't take something circadian and make it luxurious. That's why I've recently upgraded from the basic Purell to Aēsop's ultra-cool Resurrection Rinse-Free Hand Wash.

Coming in at $10 per 1.7 fl oz, you might be reminded of that intrinsic psalm from above, but test it out before succumbing to any buyer's remorse. After all, its ingredients are what set it apart: Think mandarin rind (antioxidants, liver friendly, vitamins A & C, lowers cholesterol, protects against UV rays, makes your skin glow), rosemary leaf (anti-inflammatory, stimulates the immune system, improves digestion, increases circulation, smells awesome), and cedar (antiseptic, helps oily skin and hair, insect bites, astringent, provides stress relief).

So with flu season around the corner, I walked around the NYLON offices and asked a few editors to give it a try. The reactions ranged from "Oh, can I have it?" to a surprising "Where did you get this?" and even "This smells like Vodka." While that last sentiment isn't entirely untrue, I think it's worth every penny. Drugstore hand sanitizers absolutely wreak of alcohol, but the natural oils in this one mask any unwanted smells. And perhaps the best part about this tiny anti-bacterial gem is that it doesn't leave your hands sticky or dry like we all know hand sanitizers tend to do.

For all of those public-transportation zombies out there, this one's for you.

Aēsop, Resurrection Rinse-Free Hand Wash, $10, available at Aēsop.com.

rihanna gets patriotic in march madness promo

If you weren't a March Madness fan before, you just might be one now.

Rihanna teased her new song "American Oxygen" from her upcoming album in a promo commercial for the 2015 NCAA March Madness Tournament. It's proving to be an exciting time for RiRi, with the buzz around her song "FourFive Seconds" with Sir Paul McCartney and Kanye West and her most recent release, "Towards the Sun." The promo is only 30 seconds long, but it's already enough to get us pumped: Rihanna's sassy strut in front of a giant American flag and the inspirational clips of the players scattered throughout blow the anticipation for this already beloved event out of the water.

With March Madness being one of the biggest basketball events of the year, who better than Rihanna—who is often courtside at basketball games—to amp up the hype?

But unfortunately, this round of Daylight Savings is a total lie and isn't saving us any time at all. We're actually losing an hour! It should be called Daylight Stealings Time, if you ask us. We digress...

beyoncé and katy perry are spotify's most-streamed female artists

This past year has been all about the girl power in the music industry. With Beyoncé and Rihanna topping off the music charts, we can't help but fan girl over the pop icons that have been paving the way for other female artists. These women are constantly playing on our Spotify—and the music platform has just proven that we aren't the only ones with "Flawless" on repeat.

With International Women's Day this Sunday, Spotify has released it's ranking of the most popular female artists. The list illustrates that not only women but men worldwide are turning to some of our favorite musical women throughout the day. The platform ranked the most streamed female artists by the gender of the listener. Worldwide, Beyoncé is the most played artist by women, while Katy Perry ranks as the highest female artist streamed by men.

Of course, Rihanna sweeped up the title of the world's most streamed artist for the third year in a row. Go girl!

Imagine you’ve been living underground in an apocalyptic cult run by a man named Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne for 15 years. And then, on what you mistakenly believe to be Christmas Day, a SWAT team comes and rescues you (and three other so-called “Indiana Mole Women”). Congratulations, you’ve become instantly famous for your misfortune, complete with local news segments and Today Show appearances! Well, that’s Kimmy Schmidt’s (Ellie Kemper) story, but, as the Netflix original show’s title proclaims, it’s not going to break her. To say the show, created by Tina Fey and 30 Rock showrunner Robert Carlock, is based on a far-fetched idea would be an understatement, but Kemper and the rest of the cast (which includes Jane Krakowski and Tituss Burgess) manage to make it not only enjoyable, but also relatable. File under: show you’ll most likely bingewatch on a Sunday night.

willow and jaden smith talk to billboard

It's difficult to scroll through our social media feeds without double-tapping 'grams of celebrity power couples like Kim and Kanye, Lena and Jack, and the Beckham's showing us what it's like to be filthy rich and in love. But apart from the Jenners and the Hadids, have you ever noticed no one really pays the same attention to the other celebrity siblings? After all, they're the ultimate relationships that are tied together by blood. Aside from any messy sibling rivalries, brother and sister duos are the ultimate. And thanks to Billboard, Willow and Jaden Smith just reminded us yet again that two is better than one.

Willow is giving us some serious bohemian vibes that remind us of her recent CR Fashion Book shoot while Jaden rocks some layers worthy of a street-style star. Accompanying the stunning fashion images is a surprisingly relaxed interview as the two opened up about their style inspirations, their never-ending creative outlets, and, of course, their superstar parents.

"My dad is awesome. I wouldn't be where I am right now if it wasn't for all of the things he's taught me," Jaden gushed. It's clear the apple didn't fall far from the tree. While their dad, our forever Fresh Prince of Bel Air, helped the duo break into acting, it was their mom Jada who exposed the two to their first music experiences. Willow revealed they toured with their mom's band Wicked Wisdom when they were younger. That might explain the influence behind their killer music tastes. But when it comes to fashion, Willow describes her unusual style as "high-fashion nomad," while Jaden declares his love for dressing like superheroes Batman and Robin with drapey fabrics. Classic.

Head to Billboard to see the entire shoot, styled by Billboard fashion editor Tasha Greene and photographed by Olivia Malone.

8 movies to stream on international women's day

$
0
0

This Sunday is International Women's Day. We like to celebrate women every single day, though, so we're going to observe this holiday by watching (or re-watching) movies. Specifically, movies about strong women, being played by strong women. So fire up your Netflix account, check out one of the following eight movies, and hear her roar.

In a World…
This quick-witted comedy was written and directed by its star, the irresistible Lake Bell. If that is not a pure expression of girl power, then we quit. Add to that a story about a woman—Bell plays a voiceover actor whose dream is to lend her pipes to movie trailers—trying to break into a male-dominated industry, and well, this movie is the business.

Short Term 12
One of the most acclaimed-yet-overlooked movies of 2013, Short Term 12 features a star-making performance from Brie Larson, who plays a woman working at a temporary home for troubled teens. Larson is magnetic, and her unwavering compassion in the most difficult circumstances is life-affirming stuff. This is humanity itself, in movie form.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Two words: Katniss. Everdeen.

Ida
It’s in black and white and has subtitles, but don’t let that scare you off. This meditative, beautifully rendered Polish drama about a nun confronting the dark truth about her past in post-war Poland is all about self-discovery and the strength of your spirit. Newcomer Agata Trzebuchowska gives a masterful and mature performance, and is one of the reasons Ida took home Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars last month.

Fargo
Thanks to an all-time great (and Oscar-winning) performance by Frances McDormand, and a pitch-perfect script from the Coen brothers, Marge Gunderson is as memorable as characters get. And don’t let the Minnesota-nice accent and late-stage pregnancy fool you: Marge is one of the best and baddest movie cops out there, don’t cha know.

Frida
A searing and ultimately triumphant portrayal of one our most brilliant and iconoclastic female artists. Under Julie Taymor’s steady hand, Salma Hayek gives a performance that surprised a lot of people, portraying Frida Kahlo as a woman who was as provocative, soulful, and challenging as the art she created.

The Immigrant
This criminally underseen movie came out last year, and believe it or not, marks Marion Cotillard’s first lead role in an American film. Predictably, the Oscar-winning actress nails the part of a Polish immigrant who comes to New York at the turn of the century--and rather than relying on overtures from two men with mysterious motives (Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner), is determined to make it on her own.

Iron Lady
When Meryl Streep signed on to play former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in this steely biopic, she basically said, “I’ll take my Oscar now, please.” Streep eventually won the award thanks to a transformative performance about a transformative woman.

Tom Hanks + Carly Rae Jepsen Team up for 'I really like you' video

Carly Rae Jepsen is quickly becoming pop music's unlikliest cool kid. After enlisting some of the indie world's biggest names for her upcoming album, Jepsen has once again flexed her incredible clout by landing Captain America himself for her new video. No, not Chris Evans. We're talking about a real life superhero: The one, the only, Mr. Tom Hanks.

The two-time Oscar winner stars in the brand new clip for Jepsen's massive single "I Really Like You", in which he lip syncs the earworm through the icy streets of New York. "The song is so sweet, I wanted something that would contradict that — a little bit of comedy flare or a left turn,” the singer told TIME recently. It's a refreshing change of pace from the usual boy-meets-girl narratives that we get with most musical meet-cutes of this ilk.

According to Jepsen, we can thank her manager Scooter Braun for all the whimsy, after he personally sold Hanks on the idea over dinner. We can also thank (or blame) him for Justin Bieber, who continues his image rehabilitation tour with a very out-of-place cameo. Still, we can't complain. We really, really, really, really, really like this video.
