Introducing Unsung Heroes, where we sing the praises of beauty products that don't get enough love. From the totally weird to the surprisingly essential, we'll be highlighting the life-changing little things that we obsess over.

In the beauty world, oils are considered a big deal. We could write a novel about the myriad of beauty oils and all of the kickass benefits they reap, but let’s be real: Somebody probably already beat us to it. It’s 2015, and oils are about as essential to our beauty arsenals as denim is to our wardrobes—so if you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, you should probably get on that ASAP.

As far as we’re concerned, oils are freaking fab anytime of the year. From cracked skin to parched hair, oils seem to be the cure-alls, yet there’s one kind that’s flown under the radar for far too long. Allow us to introduce you to lip oils. Falling somewhere between a balm and a gloss (sans stickiness), these skin-softening products are packed with a multitude of nutrient-rich oils to penetrate deeply and leave our kissers feeling damn fantastic. These hydrators take lip-conditioning to a whole new level, and some are event tinted for added lusciousness.

vanessa hudgens got a blunt bob

Although she's spent the last few months in rehearsals for her upcoming Broadway debut, Vanessa Hudgens hasn't let her busy schedule get in the way of her serious trendsetting. After rocking a lob for the past few months, the Spring Breakers star has gone even shorter and showed off her new blunt bob (or "bb" as she affectionately dubs it) on Instagram.

Shoulder-skimming lobs have been the talk of Hollywood hair for the past year or so, and its refreshing to see a stylish starlette switch things up. While Hudgens is known particularly for the festival-ready boho style that has basically made her the queen of Coachella, this new 'do adds a more polished touch to her look. In a time when loose waves and subtle bedhead are all the rage, a sleek bob seems all the more edgy.

While acting in her Broadway show, Gigi, the former NYLON cover star wears a wig that makes her the splitting image of a young Audrey Hepburn. We can't help but wonder if playing the title character has given Hudgens a new taste for French girl style. Either way, this chic new haircut has transformed the actress from a beachy beauty into an elegant It girl—and we love it.

8 recipes every adult should know how to make

The first few years living on your own can be tough: Grocery shopping suddenly becomes a necessary chore instead of something you do to help your parents out every once in a while. College living offers the safety blanket of all-you-can-eat dining halls, and takeout makes it easy to forget all about cooking for years on end. But there comes a point in every person's life when they must embrace adulthood full-on and learn how to make at least one meal from scratch.

We're not saying that being an adult means being a gourmet chef, but knowing your way around the kitchen does have its benefits. Cooking is a valuable skill that saves money and gives you the ability to throw a bomb dinner party to impress all your friends. But if you're not sure where to start, never fear: These eight recipes will get you started on your culinary adventures.

7 fairytale film remakes that are actually good

It might feel like Hollywood execs and film studios have been pretty heavy-handed with live-action remakes recently: Maleficent, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo... But the fact of the matter is that they've been doing it for decades. And although we love seeing new indie dramas and original rom-coms, we also love seeing our favorite classic stories come to life—and we're not alone. Most viewers gravitate towards familiar stories, choosing to watch a spin-off over an unknown film. In the eyes of the film industry, remakes are generally considered box office hits. That certainly doesn't mean they're all good—or even halfway decent. But some are definitely gems. Click through the gallery to see our picks for the top seven fairytale film remakes of all time.

selena gomez debuts her best look yet

2015 has proven to be a big year for Selena Gomez: She created new music with her maybe-boyfriend Zedd, has been even more open and honest with her fans than ever (she penned a heartfelt anti-suicide plea to one fan a few weeks ago), and has bared it all on the cover of V. Now, it seems the actress/singer has found a brand-new style that really suits her. (Snaps for her stylist.)

Continuing the '70s-inspired look she debuted along with her temporary choppy lob in late January, Gomez wore a knee-length, (hopefully faux) fur-lined jacket and printed turtleneck long-sleeved shift to the Louis Vuitton FW15 show yesterday. Her middle part and ankle go-go boots helped polish the look. It's exactly what we imagine Sally Draper would wear after meeting Penny Lane.

Going into the show's fifth season premiere on April 15, here are our ten favorite.

dascha polanco on her new role

$

Dascha Polanco is best known for her poignant portrayal of Dayanara Diaz in Orange Is The New Black, but for an actress so incredibly talented, that’s sure to only be the beginning of a long and dynamic career. She’s in The Cobbler, the new Adam Sandler film which comes out today, so we caught up with her to talk about her new role, as well as what it’s like to be a Latina in Hollywood.

So you’re Method Man’s girlfriend in the movie. Were you a fan of his music growing up?
“I am a fan of his music. He was one of my crushes. It was funny, I got to work with him in my hometown in Brooklyn, and artistically, creatively I saw a side of him–he’s so professional, such a great, powerful individual, gentleman, easy to work with, very welcoming and kind to new talent.”

Between him and Adam, were you star struck?
“I tend to get shy when I get star struck, as outgoing as I am. I do the opposite. I start to withdraw. I was nervous at first cause I didn’t know what to expect. And the history I had with him, I had his posters in my bedroom. He had no idea. It was like this is really surreal. And being part of an Adam Sandler movie, I was just grateful and humbled. I was so excited by the whole thing.”

Stepping into someone else’s shoes for a while, like in the movie, it’s not unlike being an actor.
“To me, it was genius to be able to use that as a way of understanding others, getting into backstory. Growing up I always wanted to step in and become something and then go back to being myself. I think the movie is accepting, and that’s one thing I love about The Cobbler.”

Is it hard to avoid typecasting in Hollywood?
“I would think as a Latina I would have ample opportunities. But it’s a challenge. There’s not a lot of writing or maybe there’s not a lot of perception that a Latina like myself can play a variety of roles. So I’m putting myself out there and auditioning for dramatic roles, a suburban woman, young, college, whatever. I can be right for playing many roles and I’m looking forward to either being part of it or making changes that can do more.”

A USC Annenberg study showed that Latinos made up only 4.5% of the roles in the top 100 movies of 2013.
“When I see 8% of Hollywood is Latino and all these small percentages it’s a little discouraging and it has been while growing up. It’s one of those things that has caused me to be afraid to move forward, to be intimidated by everything that’s going on. We’re talking about when I was 13. Now I’m in it to win. Once you open the door to opportunity you have to retain that. You have to work harder to do what you have to do, either that or collaborate.”

obama reads mean tweets on 'kimmel'

You gotta hand it to Jimmy Kimmel. The late night host did not waste Barack Obama's appearance on his talk show on Thursday night, as he got the president to take part in his most popular segment, "Mean Tweets." Obama, who got serious with Kimmel later on while discussing topics like Ferguson, hit all the obvious weak spots: big ears, dad jeans, his graying hair, and his golf habit. In terms of the president's viral video career, this doesn't top his appearance on Zach Galifianakis' Between Two Ferns, but it comes pretty damn close.

video premiere: laleh's 'colors'

Swedish singer Laleh is already a major star in Scandinavia, and one look at her latest video makes it easy to see why. In the video for "Colors," an exuberant song with a huge hook, Laleh is magnetic as she dances in spectacular jewelry and costumes, provided by the video's director B. Akerlund. “Laleh is a super creative singer-songwriter and I couldn’t be happier for her to be the first artist collaboration for WHOYOUARE,” she says, referring to the creative agency she runs in LA. “We both saw eye to eye on the vision for the video and created an incredible piece of art together. I used this opportunity to have emerging fashion and colorful graphics bring Laleh’s lyrics and music to life like paint brings life to the canvas.”

Laleh escaped Iran with her family when she was one year old, and for her, the video represents hope in a time when there seems to be none. "As Paul Simon once said, there is an element of magic in music, and that's really true," she says. "For just a couple of minutes you can recreate the world, and that's what this song is about. Just because it's black in the dark doesn't mean there is no color." Check it out below.

Singing in the shower might not be the most important activity we do every day, but it's most certainly one of the most fun. There's just nothing like the echo of our own voices against wet tile—it creates the best homemade acoustics imaginable. But what happens when you get the real deal—you know, someone who sings professionally—behind those glass doors? We took Allie X to Le Parker Meridien Hotel in New York City to find out. Watch to see the Canadian singer deliver a bathtime rendition of her song "Catch." As expected, it's exponentially better than anything we could ever possibly create under any showerhead.

shia labeouf just shattered our hopes and dreams

There are mornings when you wake up and know something completely horrible is going to happen, and even though today is Friday the 13th, I could have never anticipated that one headline and a suggestive photo would destroy my dreams. But alas, that's just happened when I saw that Shia LaBeouf may be engaged to his too cool/too stunning/too anything girlfriend, Mia Goth.

According to US Weekly, the Nymphomaniac actress was seen in L.A. wearing a hefty diamond ring on her left ring finger. There's no official confirmation from either party, and people wear diamond rings all the time, right? In the off chance that there's actually a wedding on the horizon, I have to say that they deserve love. The couple, who met on the set of Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac: Vol. II, have been through a lot: an alleged rape, arrests, pedeophilia allegations stemming from his jaw-dropping performance in Sia's "Elastic Heart," and, most recently, LaBeouf's new rat tail (one that I surprisingly fully support). And yes, the couple seems happy together—LaBeouf's Twitter feed has preached nothing but love and acceptance as of late.

Whether or not there's any truth to this, I'm going to make myself a stiff whiskey drink and consume pints full of Ben & Jerry's. It is Friday, after all.

how to be instagram famous

Despite the prevalence of Von Dutch trucker hats, bedazzled Sidekicks, and studded belts, life seemed much simpler in the aughts. Back then (read: 6+ years ago), all we had to do was worry about what MySpace backdrop reflected our personality the most, or what sassy response to give SmarterChild (because, let's face it, he totally had it coming). Now, the world wide web seems a little too vast and social media a little too pressure-inducing. The best way to approach it all, we've learned, is to use it all as it was originally intended: as a platform for self-expression. We spoke to ten of our favorite personalities on Instagram to find out exactly how to utilize the photo sharing app as a hub for personal and professional growth. Terrence Howard's hidden history of abuse

$

I’ve had a pretty rocky love/hate relationship with Empire since its premiere. Why I love it: It’s the first primetime network drama co-created by a black screenwriter (Lee Daniels), with a predominantly black cast, the drama is addictive, and no one can make boss moves in leopard quite like Cookie Lyon. Why I hate it: The plot has holes, the music is subpar (except, of course, for “Drip Drop”), and then there’s the most recent complication to my sentiments toward the show–my discovery that I’ve been watching a six-time-accused woman beater on television each week.

For the past 15 years, Howard (who plays the lead role of Lucious Lyon) has remained mum about his extensive history of violence against women. First, in August 2000, was his alleged assault of a Continental Airlines flight attendant. Two years later, he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after punching his first wife in the face. He made the same plea in 2005 when he assaulted a woman and her fiancé in a Philadelphia diner. The proceedings of his second divorce were riddled with claims of verbal and physical assault, with his ex-wife filing a restraining order against him in 2011 after a physical altercation, and another in 2013 when she showed up in court with a black eye after the couple had reconciled. A year before the second restraining order was issued, Howard was accused of choking and striking his then-girlfriend, May Seng Yang. Although Howard wasn’t charged, Yang was arrested for punching him, and the issue was settled in a civil suit. And what does Howard have to say about all of this? Not much.

So when I discovered this well-documented but not-often-commented-upon past, as a feminist/woman/person with thoughts, I had a major dilemma: How could I support the endeavors of a man who put his hands on a woman on six different occasions, with seemingly little remorse?

Domestic abuse has long troubled our country, and only recently have significant efforts been made to address it in the celebrity realm. I can’t tell you how many feels I’ve gotten during the No More “Speechless” PSAs, andeven the most recent Grammys dedicated a segment to It’s On Us and Brooke Axtell’s story of survival. At a time when we’re encouraging people to be upfront about violence against women, here is Howard casually getting away with a major career revival. He’s intentionally dodging his past, and we’d be doing an injustice to not sound the alarm.

So, here I am: Sounding the alarm. But even with my anger towards Howard—and those who dismiss his history—I can’t deny the fact that Empire is a damn good show. Yes, it is far from perfect, but any time you combine the plotlines of King Lear and Dynasty, and throw in some Timbaland-produced beats, you’re sure to get my vote. And it’s more than just a soap opera by black people, about black people: The show is shining a light on what it’s like to have ALS and bipolar disorder, struggling to accept one’s homosexuality, domestic violence, and many more social issues. Plus, its viewership has been climbing by the millions every week since the premiere. No show has ever done thatEver. How many other primetime dramas are as popular as Empire, and address so many hot-button topics?

So on one hand, Howard is an amazing actor, and the lead of a groundbreaking drama. On the other hand, if the court papers are to be believed, he’s a monster.

First off, let’s be clear: championing against domestic violence and for diversity in media are not mutually exclusive. Howard is just one part of the puzzle—others created, wrote, directed, and star in Empire—and to boycott the show solely because of him would remove much-deserved support from the many people who made it happen. But liking Empire does not mean that we should stop talking about the lead’s abusive past.

Moreover, as a black woman, I do feel obligated to continue watching the show. Truth be told, ingrained in the black community is a culture of unwavering support, the idea that “everybody eats.” Since it’s rare for a black person to achieve widespread success, when someone does, full-on encouragement is critical. It’s why we rally behind the history-making singers, politicians, and actors without hesitation. It’s why Empire features actors like Raven-Symoné, Derek Luke, Mary J. Blige, and Malik Yoba—stars who, despite their undeniable talent, would not have gotten major roles right now if Empire wasn’t on the air.

Basically, we have to provide consistent support for each other because it’s not guaranteed from anyone else. So, according to this community-centric culture, I’m supposed to watch Empire and ignore Howard’s history–but I can’t quite wrap my conscience around that.

Beverly Johnson cites similar reasoning for taking so long to come forward with her allegations against Bill Cosby: She couldn’t bear to tarnish his name at a time when it was nearly impossible for a black man to receive such accolades. But pointing out the wrongdoings of another, more successful black person does not mean that you’re bringing down your “brother” or “sister.” I can recognize Howard’s talents and still acknowledge that he should be held accountable for his violent past. That doesn’t make me a hater–or worse, a sellout.

The details of the accusations against Howard are gut-wrenching, but that discomfort does not merit the removal of support for what Empire is doing for television. What it does merit, however, is for us to continue to talk about the gravity of the allegations against Howard, to hold guilty parties accountable for abuse, and to continue to blow the whistle on incidents of assault that have been swept under the rug for far too long, no matter who the abuser may be.

true romance: i married my high school boyfriend

Welcome to True Romance, our brand-new series of awww-inducing love stories. Don't worry, though, these essays won't make you gag: We're all about the real talk when it comes to finding your person. Here, you'll find honest, funny, surprising, touching, moving stories—because at the end of the day, who doesn't want to talk about love?

I’ve known Nick since I was 14. We were introduced at a ska show in the town I grew up in. I fell in love with him instantly, in that intense teenage way, and have yet to fall out.

We spent our high school years getting to know each other while fighting, falling in love, and finding ways to kill time in suburban New Jersey.

When he went away to college it felt like the end of the world. During college we broke up, decided against it, broke up again, and did that weird thing where you’re dating but like, not really dating.

He is half of my favorite teenage memories.

Like the night in high school that I dyed my hair right before we went sledding down the giant golf course hill on a tiny plastic sled. Every time we crashed at the bottom, I left a trail of hot pink snow behind me. I was completely under-dressed, totally frozen, and I laughed the whole way down.

He’s also half of the not so great ones.

Like the time I was in community college, working two shitty jobs (one of which required wearing a Hawaiian shirt and serving food in my local mall) and dealing with a grandmother who just had a major stroke. Nick left school and surprised me outside of my job at 9am, breakfast in hand. I was so relieved to see him, I could actually feel the tension leaving my shoulders, a phenomenon I have yet duplicate.

It’s become impossible for me to think back on that time without conjuring up an incredibly strange mix of images; short vignettes that enter my brain whenever I see a certain place, wear a particular thing, or hear a specific sound.

How my favorite black shirt brings me back to after my grandmother died and I curled up on Nick’s lap outside the bathroom at the funeral parlor because I wanted to feel small but mostly because I wanted to hide.

All of these memories are mixed together in my brain. They remind me of who I am and where I’ve been. And how far we’ve both come.

I will never forget the night he told me he loved someone else. I thought I’d never forgive him for it. But I did. And it’s as much a part of our history as my memory of the night he asked me to marry him—clear-eyed and unusually serious, overlooking a lake at 2am, as we both stood in the snow.

lena dunham's 'scandal' promo is here

One day, when historians write the definitive book on Lena Dunham's guest appearance on Scandal, today will go down as a pivotal moment. ABC just released the first promo for next week's episode, and it starts off the only way it possibly could: with Dunham's character shouting, "Oh my God, you're Olivia Pope!" You better believe she is.

In the episode called "It's Good to Be Kink," Dunham and her bangs play an author who just penned a tell-all that "threatens to take down Washington," according to the man with the deep voice. Naturally, it falls on Kerry Washington and her squad of Gladiators to make sure that does not happen. And if Lena Dunham isn't enough reason to tune in, then the trailer also promises "50 Shades of Scandal," which apparently is a thing. Can't wait!

everything you need to know about exfoliating

$
0
0

By now, we've given you the rundown on serums, cleansers, and even eyelashes—but the exfoliation step in your beauty routine is just as crucial. And while some find this part of the process rather tedious (or worse, optional), others (like myself) consider it the best part. Nothing excites me more than sloughing away dead skin cells from my face. So just to make sure I'm doing this right, I decided to speak with Dr. Jody Levine, NYC-based dermatologist and AOB Med Spa National Director, on how to properly exfoliate, the pros and cons of exfoliating, and which exfoliators I should be using now.

My experience with exfoliators has had ups and downs. Some of them dry out my skin so badly it feels like I'm a rattlesnake, whereas others give me such a glow you'd think I was pregnant. I stopped using my Clarisonic, for example, when my dermatologist told me studies showed it creates micro-tears in your skin every time you use it. But sometimes even those top shelf microdermabrasion tools don't even do the trick, which can be quite the paradox (and make quite the dent in the wallet).

When I talked to Dr. Levine, I learned the exfoliation process is more complicated than I thought. "Cleansing beforehand will prevent you from scrubbing oil, dirt, and residue into your pores. As skin renews itself when you sleep, I recommend exfoliating in the morning to help slough away dead skin cells that accumulated overnight. Always moisturize after exfoliation, as it can strip the skin of its natural oils," Levine explained. When we cheat our skin of its natural moisture, that can cause overcompensation, which means excessive amounts of sebum that can clog our pores we just tried ever-so-earnestly to refine.

And unfortunately, over-exfoliation is another consequence of improper skin renewing techniques that's an easy crime to commit. It's important to remember that exfoliation actually happens naturally as our skin cells are born in the lowest layer of our epidermis and work their way up. As we age, though, this process tends to slow down—hence the transition from "youth preservation" products to "anti-aging" products. The negative effects of over-exfoliating are pretty daunting: "Vigorous exfoliation can cause irritation and redness, driving bacteria and fungus into your pores. At home, daily chemical exfoliation with a gentle exfoliating acid is appropriate but mechanical exfoliation with scrubs should be performed one to two times weekly. A stronger, in-office treatment can be performed monthly."

So it's safe to say how often you exfoliate and your exfoliant's ingredients are vital. Personally, I like to stick to those most natural in composition. Fresh's Sugar Face Polish ($62) is sort of ridiculous in the sense that it almost gives you a reason to forego the rest of your beauty routine because it does everything you need: It cleanses, exfoliates, hydrates, and brightens using brown sugar, grapeseed oil, and—get this—strawberry seeds. And, of course, the next best thing is the good old DIY face scrub. Stick to the tried and trues like baking soda, sugar, oatmeal, and sea salt as your base ingredients to mix with an oil of your choice. I'm a huge fan of lavender oil—it calms down any exfoliation-induced irritation and redness almost instantly and scales down those little bumps that like to hang out along our cheeks and chin. Some alternatives to oils are Avène's Thermal Spring Water ($12.50), or for you serum-lovers out there, try LIFTLAB's LIFT + FIX Serum ($110) for its anti-inflammation and redness reducing properties.

But if any of the above seems to good to be true (or just too damn complicated), click through the slideshow to find our roundup of the 10 best exfoliators to try. Remember to pay attention to the parts that matter (ingredients, texture) and ignore the things that don't (brand, price). Because if one thing's certain, there's no better cure to a face of fatigue than scrubbing away the scraps and starting all over again.

read this if winter totally ruined your shoes

$

We’ve been told to walk a mile in someone’s shoes to truly understand them. But after this season’s generous supply of snow and ice, just walking down the block in our own shoes is hard enough. Though our spirits may be down from the cold, it’s our footwear that’s truly suffered. We’ve gathered the best tips on how to care for your shoes after the winter months—so that they can make it to next year's snowpocalypse in one piece.

But first, why does leather require more care than other materials? Leather is not a manmade material, like rubber or nylon, which hold up well in moist and wet environments. Leather is animal skin—it’s composed of fibers held together by protein bonds. The oils in leather keep the protein bonds strong and ensure the fibers don’t fall apart. When boots get soaked or covered in snow, the moisture strips away the oils and makes your shoes dry and less supple. If they continue to get wet and lose oils, the protein bonds won’t be able to hold the fibers together. Ultimately, boots will become brittle and crack. Imagine dragging your purse through the snow and ice every day! Keeping your favorite leather shoes away from moisture and well oiled is the key to making them last.

Rhyme to repeat: Don’t wear leather in bad weather.
Sounds obvious, but we hate carrying an extra pair of shoes around in our bag as much as the next polar vortex victim. To ensure your leather boots stay looking new, don’t wear them when it’s icy, snowing, or raining outside. Purchasing a pair of waterproof shoes, like rain boots or duck boots, to wear outside is an investment worth making. Be proactive about checking the weather each morning. While it’s easier to dash out the door wearing your new loafers, stash them in your bag and put on more weather-appropriate shoes for commuting instead.

Take ‘em to a professional.
A professional can prep your shoes for the upcoming winter and repair any damage that’s been done at the end of the season. Often, cobblers will add a protective rubber layer to the bottom of a boot or heel to prevent deterioration from wet surfaces. They know how to best match polishes to shoes—ensuring your flats look as shiny as the day you bought them. Cobblers also make shoes soft again by using professional-grade conditioners. The conditioning process takes time and effort, since the conditioner must be carefully and repeatedly massaged into the leather fibers. Think of cobblers like dry cleaners for shoes. Professionals frequently clean and care for your favorite dress and sweater. Why shouldn’t your everyday boots get the same love, even if just once a year?

Do what you can at home.
It’s unrealistic to assume you’ll never get caught in an unexpected shower or flurry (or hey, even downpour). If this does happen, take action before your boots dry. Use a damp washcloth or rag to remove any dirt while your shoes are still wet. Doing this ensures mud doesn’t cake on the leather—making it even tougher to clean off later. For intense grime that needs more than a cloth and water, try using baby shampoo or uncented Dove soap to lightly wash. If your shoes are really soaked, tightly stuff them with newspaper or crumpled up magazine pages. As your shoes dry out, this will help them retain their shape.

If cared for properly, leather can last for years. Following these tips will guarantee your favorite riding boots will be shiny and ready-to-wear for many Octobers to come. Not having to buy new soles will keep your soul (and wallet) happy, too.
