dakota johnson ditches her signature bangs

$

Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson is a pretty obvious choice as a Cosmopolitan cover star—but what's interesting about her Cosmo Australia cover is that Johnson ditched her signature bangs. Opting for a Silverlake-cool-girl turned Old-Hollywood look, she's styled with a deep side part, blunt lob, and beachy waves, making her look virtually unrecognizable. But to quote Shakespeare, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet"—and Johnson looks amazing (no shocker here).

Her infamous character, Anastasia Steele, is known for her mousy brown hair and no-fuss ponytail. But before Johnson signed onto the film, she had long, blonde hair. And yes, she had bangs.

To all die-hard Fifty Shades fans, don't worry—based on her recent Academy Awards appearance and her SNL promo, Johnson currently has the brown hair and the bangs. So you can rest easy; the sequel will still show Steele in the same way you always envisioned her.

chrissy teigen is no longer blonde

Late-night snacking antics and crying face aside, we identify Chrissy Teigen with her sun-kissed highlighted locks. But now that's all changed. The model has traded in her blonde hair for a darker, chestnut hue—and to no one's surprise, it looks amazing.

The 29-year-old debuted her new look on Instagram, first with the color just setting in her wet hair and later with her newly dyed strands glossy and blowed out, ready for a photo shoot. Teigen is one of those mystical creatures who looks gorgeous whether she's sporting a baseball cap and sweats or rocking a custom couture gown. But we can't help but admire how her new color compliments her warm brown eyes and glowing complexion.

Hair stylist David Lopez also posted an on-set photo of Teigen rocking some majorly dramatic eyeliner with her new voluminous 'do. With her loose waves and darker color, Teigen's look is a little bit Sophia Loren and a little bit beach babe—and we're obsessed.

song premiere: saun & starr's "look closer"

Ever wonder what it's like to sing backup? Saundra Williams and Starr Duncan Lowe could tell you a thing or two. The soulful duo become friends when they met at an open mic night in Harlem in the '80s. They sung backup together for Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings for the past 5 years. Now, though, they're ready to take center stage as Saun & Starr with the upcoming release of their debut full-length album, Look Closer (out on May 19th , 2015.

If you're unfamiliar with The Dap-Kings, they're the Grammy winners from the record label Daptone, and helped Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse record at least six songs on her album Back To Black in 2008. It's no doubt these ladies are in good company and ready to get back out there and do the damn thing. "The feeling of being a part of the Daptone Family makes me feel like we have a platform to be free to stay true to the sounds of what we grew up on and love," Duncan Lowe said.

We're particularly enamored with Saun & Starr's debut single "Look Closer (Can't You See The Signs?)." It's the title track off of their 11-song record that brings the house down in a way only experienced soul artists could—with ease, depth, and a little bit o' trumpet.

six ways to channel your inner '70s beauty goddess

The '90s fashion revival lasted (dare we say it?) a little bit longer than it had a right to. Now, it's finally being replaced with a new decade: the 1970s. And, while throwing on some bell bottoms or a boho maxi dress is easy, figuring out how to get your makeup to match the retro vibe is a little trickier. So, we tapped Topshop Beauty Consultant Hannah Murray for her best '70s makeup tricks.

1. To make your '70s makeup feel modern, Murray says, "Go more disheveled glam rock, as opposed to retro Biba. Think more Anita Pallenberg, than glam Jerry Hall."

2. Don't go overboard: "Pick just one '70s accent and don't overwork it." So, choose one statement, like blue eyeshadow, and keep the rest of your makeup minimal.

3. Love that glam '70s glossy red mouth thing? Here's how to update it: Apply your lipstick directly from the tube, and then "diffuse the edges with a dry cotton bud," Murray explains. This will soften the edges of your pout. "I love Topshop's Beauty Lips in Screen Siren or Sheer Lips in Red Alert." To complement the blurred lip, "Define the eye with smudgy grey and black kohl liner, for a look similar to what I created for the Unique SS15 show [pictured here]. It's less refined and a bit more bad girl."

4. Of course, red lipstick isn't the only way to go. Murray advises, "Choose a classic '70s lipstick tone—toffee, burnt orange, burgundy, or mauve, and let that be the focus, keeping the rest of the face clean and fresh."

5. If you're not into lipstick, there's an eyeshadow option, too. "Channel Anita Pallenberg by smudging black Kohl and dirty metallic shadows from the Smokey Eye Palette in Subversive around your eyes," Murray says, and advises to skip the false lashes which were ubiquitous to the decade.

6. Finally, if you're not ready to give up on your '90s vibes altogether, Murray says that working a little grunge into your retro look is actually a great idea. "It feels more modern to bring a bit of toughness into the look with a nod to the '90s. But with shaggy hair and folk-like prints, it instantly feels cool-'70s."

kanye west breaks down during interview

Kanye West gave a forty minute interview to BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe this afternoon, and showed a side of himself the public has never seen before. When West began speaking of his friend, the late British fashion scholar Louise Wilson, he broke down in tears, forcing Lowe to momentarily stop the interview. West is prone to emotional outbursts during interviews (remember this?), but even he was surprised by his reaction. "That's never happened to me in an interview before," West said when he was finally ready to continue. Wilson, who counted Alexander McQueen, Jonathan Saunders, and Christopher Kane among her students, died suddenly last May at 52. West describes their last encounter over dinner at Hakkassan in London ("my favorite restaurant in London"), where she gave him advice not to clap when his daughter does something great so he can teach her to keep striving for more. His breakdown occurs at around the 26:20 mark, but as usual, the entire interview is worth a listen.

selena gomez posts an emotional anti-suicide message

After seeing an Instagram comment suggesting one of her fans was going to commit suicide, Selena Gomez penned a heartbreaking note advocating life. She then took a screenshot of the comment and posted it on her Instagram.

"By me following you is not me saying it's ok to think these thoughts," she writes. "It's not me saying 'hey you said sad things, so I'm going to follow you to make you feel better'. God puts us in situations that are so unexplainably difficult for a reason. There is someone in the world feeling so much, just like you. There is someone who will always have it way better or way worse than you. The point of all of that is for to feel not alone. My point is, you are not alone in this world. People everyday feel so many emotions they wish they could turn it off, but that's not why we are here. We are here for relationships, for people just like us who feel worthless. Your purpose is to share, help, encourage. Remember that. Please. Before you think of taking your life, think of all the [lives] you could save. I love you. More importantly there is a God that will love more than I ever could."

In her caption, she wrote, "I'm sorry I had to share. Every life is worth it." Given Gomez's immense honesty and openness with her fans (she even wrote a personal song about heartbreak), it's clear that Gomez did not post this just to make headlines or place herself in a positive light. Hopefully her words, which everyone can relate to, will help those going through a hard time.

8 tips for shopping a sample sale

$
0
0

If there is one ultimate goal that we all have when going into a sample sale, it’s to get the best pieces at the best prices. Obviously. That being said, that goal is more easily set than accomplished. It's not for a lack of opportunity: In New York especially, there is practically a sample sale to shop every day and around every corner. But where does a newbie start?

Sample sale shopping is practically a sport. It's rigorous, tiring, and requires serious dedication and commitment. Remember that episode of Friends when Monica fights a woman for the wedding dress she wants at the sample sale? Well, yes, sometimes that does happen. But, fear not, we've got you covered with some quick tips to get the best deals and the least amount of injuries.*

1. Scope The Web
Before you leave the house you want to do your research. Sites like Racked and NYMag are great for checking out what sales are coming up, often listed with the address and opening and closing times so that you can plan accordingly. They also have great reviews of the sales if you miss the first day but still want to check the sale out.

2. Research The Brand
It’s always a good idea to have in mind what kind of pieces you’re looking for from past seasons. It’s not guaranteed that those items will be on sale, but having a rough game plan can save you a lot of time, stress, and potential cat fights. If you’re there for the handbags, head to the handbags first; if you’re there for the denim, head to the denim first. It’s important to prioritize what you’re hoping to grab.

 3. Wear Easy-To-Remove Clothes
Sample sales often don’t have fitting rooms and when they do it’s usually just an area squared off by rails. Although it may not be the most stylish look, wearing leggings and a tight tank top is my personal go-to as it makes for an easy base to slip pieces over. It’s kind of uncomfortable for everyone to see women running around naked, plus taking off all your clothes is more of a time-suck. Also, always bring a lightweight coat (if it’s winter) and a small bag so that you don’t have to check them.

4. Bring Cash
Although lots of sample sales do accept debit and credit cards these days, there are some that are still old fashioned in their cash-only policy. There is absolutely nothing worse  than being in line to pay for all your goods and realizing that the sale is cash only (okay, maybe some things are worse, but you know what I mean). I always make sure to bring a solid amount of cash just to be safe.

5. Early Bird Gets The Worm
The best selection is always on the first day. It’s unfortunate but true, and yes it means getting up early and joining the line before opening if you really want to get the best stuff. I will fully admit that I have been that girl who has gotten up at 5am for a sample sale (more than once), but the sleep deprivation has been totally worth it.

6. But Come Back At The End
Going at the tail-end of the sale isn’t a bad idea either. Sample sales typically drop their prices as the sale goes on. The most coveted items will almost certainly be sold out by the final day, but that does’t mean there aren’t some gems that can still be found.

7. Look For Imperfections
It’s crucial to check your items for holes, rips, or missing buttons before purchasing, as sample sales do not accept returns. If you see a fixable imperfection, it’s totally kosher to ask a sales assistant if it would be possible to get a slight discount.

8. It’s Ok To Leave Empty Handed
Don’t be afraid to walk away without buying anything. It’s not worth it just because it’s cheap, and if you don’t love it then you probably don’t need it. Trust us, there are always more sample sales to go to.

*we’re kidding about the injuries…kind of.

scarlett johansson breaks her silence on that photo

It was the photo that sent shivers rippling through social media: John Travolta awkwardly holding Scarlett Johansson on the red carpet and planting a very John Travolta-y kiss on her cheek. She did not seem to be enjoying herself. Obviously, this was a case of a camera capturing a frozen moment that probably wasn't as frought as it looked, but it remained one of the lasting images from an Oscars ceremony with very few of them. But the photo ended up being such a big deal that Johansson released a statement to the Associated Press, defending Travolta:

"The image that is circulating is an unfortunate still-frame from a live-action encounter that was very sweet and totally welcome. That still photo does not reflect what preceded and followed if you see the moment live. Yet another way we are misguided, misinformed and sensationalized by the 24-hour news cycle. I haven't seen John in some years and it is always a pleasure to be greeted by him."

Johansson also shot directly back against the "John Travolta is creepy" narrative that has engulfed her Love Song for Bobby Long co-star as of late, calling him a "class act" and saying ""there is nothing strange, creepy or inappropriate about John Travolta."

When something like this happens, we always wonder if the people involved have seen it, and what they think about it. Memes and virality are a relatively new aspect of the celebrity industrial complex that stars are still learning to cope with. Do they take them seriously? Dismiss them like the digital detritus they are? Or just completely ignore them? When Serious Person Angelina Jolie's leg went viral at the 2012 Oscars, she was forced to address it during an interview with The Huffington Post, saying "I don't watch those TV shows and if I go online and see something about myself, I don't click on it. And the people I surround myself with don't really talk about that kind of stuff. I heard something, but I didn't pay any attention."

Johnasson obviously did pay attention, maybe because she saw her friend was unfairly being attacked and felt obliged to come to his defense.

see the first photo of eddie redmayne in his transgender role

After winning the Academy Award for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, Eddie Redmayne is set to tell another important, virtually untold story: The British actor will play Lile Elbe (née Einar Wegener) inThe Danish Girl, a film about the Danish transgender artist who helped pioneer gender reassignment surgery in the 1930s. This morning, Working Title Productions released the first image of Redmayne as Elbe.

Adapted from the titular David Ebershoff novel and directed by Tom Hooper, the film tells the story of Elbe and his wife, Gerda (Alicia Vikander). As the story goes, Gerda asked her husband to model women's clothing after a female model cancelled a portrait session. It was a moment of awakening for Wegener, who later underwent a series of gender reassignment surgeries in Berlin from 1930-1931. Sadly, she sadly passed after suffering from a uterus organ rejection in '31. The film focuses on the couple's changing relationship, showing a passionate, atypical love story. Originally, as The Guardian reports, the film studio was looking to Nicole Kidman to play Elbe and Gwyneth Paltrow to play Gerda.

While we know that Redmayne will do this role justice, he is the latest in a series of cisgender actors cast as trans people. It's a double-edged sword: The film industry is finally creating more trans* roles, but it seems as if they are unwilling to support the trans* community in a complete way. Hopefully the next time a major, groundbreaking film about a member of this community gets greenlit, it'll be cast with a trans person in the lead—after all, visibility is a huge part of the fight for equality.

everything you need to know about eyelashes

$
0
0

There's perhaps no greater addition to the human face than eyelashes. They protect our eyeballs from life's pesky airborne debris and reduce the intensity of the sun's harmful rays (think your own personal pair of sunglasses for your eyelids). Also, they're just so pretty. And while we can't all have the lengthy eyelashes of say, a desert camel, the beauty industry never fails to provide us with cool ways to enhance 'em.

If you're wondering what to do with your eyelashes this time of year, start here. We spoke to a couple of the industry's leaders on tinting, extending, conditioning—and even falsies.

Tinting
The thought of dyeing a set of eyelashes might sound like one too many chemicals (and a whole lot of discomfort), but there are actually a few DIY ways you can do it. Try Godefroy's 28-Day Permanent Eyelash Tint Kit, for example. It's fairly easy to use, and has instant results.

Or for the extreme DIY-ers out there, take it back to the basics with Byrdie's at-home trick. All you need is water, a clean mascara wand, Henna powder, cotton balls, and some petroleum jelly.

Conditioning
Conditioning your eyelashes is just like conditioning the hair on your head. Turns out, one of the best things you can do for your lashes is condition them on the daily. It will help increase lash strength and flexibility to create more resilient lashes that can withstand the bombardment of tools, chemicals, and adhesives. Try RevitaLash's Nouriche Conditioner ($130)—it's a pretty penny, but a little bit goes a long way and you'll thank us later. (Tip: They've got one for brows, too!)

Or try Wink for a more wallet-friendly version. It's all-natural using omega-3s and omega-6s (along with castor oil, which is said to aid in darkening the lashes, as well) and works for your brows as well.

Extending
Let's face it: There are a million different marketing strategies out there that we can all admit to falling for when it comes to getting longer lashes. But in reality, there's no such thing as instant lash growth without an outstanding set of falsies. While some faux lashes can damage your eyelids over time, brands like Thrive Causemetics have developed false eyelashes that are formulated without any parabens, harsh chemicals, or latex, and can be worn up to 30 times with proper care. (We like the Jackie.) And for every pair sold, the company donates a pair to a cancer survivor in need.

"The faux lashes that were in the marketplace at the time didn't offer a solution as the lash strip base did not adhere to lashes without the support of a woman's natural lashes. I wanted to develop an easy-to-use solution for those women and through our proprietary lash strip base, our lashes flex and move with the contours of a woman's eyelid shape to work whether women have lashes or not," Karissa Bodnar, Thrive's founder and CEO, explained. Think TOMS Shoes, but for beauty.

important: you can buy #thedress

Regardless of what color you think it is (blue-gold-gray-white-rainbow-sparkles!), you can officially buy the dress that's dividing the internet. You know, the one that's sparking conspiracy theories, breaking up friendships, and making people say, "I can't be a part of that" (something that we actually just overheard at NYLON HQ).

The ambiguously hued garment is available at U.K. retailer Roman. And the company, to no one's surprise, wants everyone to know about it. While you've been pondering existential questions (no doubt ending in What's even the point of it all??), Roman has been busy blowing up their social media platforms by retweeting gems like parodies of the Kim K Paper Mag cover and British Parliament showing up to debate the dress (if you've never seen BP in action, well, they go all in).

As reported by Business Insiderthe dress was originally worn to a wedding by the bride's mother, who sent the photo to her daughter. The bride and her fiancé saw two different colors, posted it on Facebook. A friend of the couple, named Caitlin McNeill, then posted the photo on a Tumblr fan page dedicated to talent manager Sarah Weichel. The photo then went viral and, well, you know the rest.

If you feel so inclined to rock the "amazing lace" viscose-blend dress, you can get it here. But if you do choose to buy it, maybe stay away from any open flames—it looks extremely flammable.

And, by the way...

donald glover on his very exciting new movies

$

Since abruptly leaving NBC's cult comedy Community in 2013, Donald Glover has been moving further away from his reputation as a comedian, focusing instead on his rapping career as Childish Gambino (although even that is now up in the air), and a bunch of movie roles that could help redefine his professional trajectory. In The Lazarus Effect, which hits theaters today, Donald Glover is stepping out of his comedic comfort zone and into the dark, menacing corners of the horror genre. In the film, he plays one in a team of scientists who helps revive their colleague (Olivia Wilde) after she accidentally dies. If you've seen the trailer, then we do not have to tell you that everything goes to hell from there. Glover, who's been addressing some interesting Spider-Man rumors in recent interviews, also has upcoming roles in the Ridley Scott space saga The Martian and in Magic Mike XXL, both of which he touches on below.

You’re mainly known for comedy. How was it doing horror like this? Can you tell if you’re getting it right?
I can feel it sometimes but most of the time you don’t know. That’s why it’s a little scary, because you don’t know if you’re pulling it off. You just have to trust the director’s honest and getting what he needs.

And are you getting what you need in Magic Mike XXL?
I’m kind of keeping it quiet, but yeah, I’m in it. I did have to get waxed, so that’s a hint. I just want people to be surprised by the whole event. It’s really not a movie, it feels like an event. It really does feel really big.

Waxed? Is that just another day at the barbershop?
It wasn’t a walk in the park. It’s definitely something I’ve never done before.

But I don’t care how ripped you are, you gotta feel a little funny up there.
You kind of learn that everything is confidence. Being sexy is confidence. Regardless, all the good stuff, watching the first one, the thing that really sells that is Channing’s this ripped, good looking, charming guy and he does silly stuff once in awhile and he owns it. And I think that’s what makes women like that.

And you just wrapped work on The Martian directed by Ridley Scott and co-starring Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara and so many other great actors.
It was a pretty crazy experience working with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kristen Wiig. It was a crazy cast to work with and also being in Hungary, it felt like camp. We had big monologues about NASA. It felt like real acting, like a play. And Ridley was very hands on. I think as you get older you don’t want to use as much energy. He knows what he likes.

So Matt Damon gets left behind on a mission to Mars and…?
The themes are loneliness, really how hard it is to survive. The interesting part of it is don’t panic. Just find a way to survive. Don’t freak out.

Before you go, I know you’re pretty tight with Tracy Morgan. How’s he doing?
He’s a really good guy. He taught me a lot and we worked together multiple times outside of 30 Rock. It’s kind of sad that something like that happened. He’s kind of keeping to himself. It’s such a personal matter.

10 things that prove that emma watson actually is hermione

$
0
0

There are some actors that play characters with a high degree of believability—and then there are actors that actually may be their characters. The latter applies to our favorite female in Hollywood, Emma Watson, and her name-making character, Hermione Granger. Not only are the two some of the most tenacious personalities in Hollywood and the wizard world, but collectively, they have helped shape feminism and the futures of young women across the globe. Although the Harry Potter film series may have come to an end, there's no doubt that Watson is continuing (and expanding upon) the legacy of her frizzy haired counterpart alive and well. Here are ten things that prove that Emma Watson is actually Hermione:

1. She used to mouth Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint's lines
As she revealed in a W Magazine Screen Tests with Lynn Hirschberg video, Watson used to memorize her Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone co-star's lines. "If you watch carefully in some scenes, you can see me mouthing Harry and Ron's lines, as well as my own," Watson said. "Because that's just what I was like. I was... I was crazy." Watch a screen test below to see.

2. She is a fervent feminist
Hermione certainly wasn't a secondary character—she was fiercely strong, independent, intelligent, and played a pivotal role in Voldemort's demise. Watson herself embodies all of the aforementioned attributes. She was voted the Celebrity Feminist of 2014 and continues to fight for gender equality through her work with #HeForShe.

3. She's a total bookworm
Watson entered Brown University in 2009, the same year she was named the decade's highest-grossing actress by the Guinness Book of World Records. She graduated last year, where she received a Bachelor's degree in English literature. "I love books so much," she told us in our October 2012 issue. "I can't begin to tell you..."

4. She understands time management
Watson starred in seven feature films during her time at Brown. SEVEN! Whether or not she had a time turner like Hermione, we'll never know...

5. She is the Hollywood equivalent of a Muggle
As the daughter of two lawyers, Watson is not related to any film industry insider. When she was 9 years old, she was chosen from a school assembly to audition for the role of Hermione Granger. After nine callbacks (read: a lot of hard work), Watson's natural talent landed her the role. "I just felt like that part belonged to me," she told Interview. "I know that sounds crazy, but from that first audition, I always knew." Similarly, it was Granger's natural skills and her strong personality that led her to Hogwartz.

6. She is extremely articulate
When you think about it, it seems as if Watson has never (as of late) said "Umm..." or "Uhh..." Like her fictional counterpart, she may be one of the modern-era's most eloquent women. No doubt she'd pronounce "leviosa" correctly from the beginning.

7. She's not afraid to try new things
In Perks of Being a Wallflower, Watson took on an American accent for the first time on screen. Though she says it was terrifying, she went through with hit and nailed it (duh). Early scenes from the film even landed her the lead in Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring. Hermione, like Watson, goes into things full-force. But that doesn't mean they both don't study up beforehand...

8. She is "constantly thinking three, four moves ahead"
In an interview with HitFix, Watson said, “I’m very heady in the same way that she is; I’m constantly thinking three, four moves ahead. I try to intellectualize a lot, which she does as well, obviously. I’m very determined as well... I feel so much of me went into her and so much of her went into me. I can’t really differentiate too much anymore it’s all a bit of a blur.”

9. She wants to make the world a better place
According to Stephen Chobsky, Watson signed onto Perks of Being a Wallflower (in turn, helping the movie get green-lit) for a noble reason: "Because I think this movie can prevent someone from killing themselves," Chobsky recounted her saying (in our October 2012 issue). Also, her #HeForShe initiative, mentioned earlier, promotes gender equality. Hermione, as well as fighting the dark forces in the wizard world, fights for the rights of the downtrodden. She founded the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare (S.P.E.W.) after witnessing the mis-treatment of house-elves.

10. She's a great role model
If Watson and Hermione have taught us anything, it's that despite seemingly unconquerable forces, anyone with ambition and determination can accomplish anything with a little hard work.

listen: diplo, skrillex, and justin bieber made a pretty song

Super DJs Diplo and Skrillex, who collaborate under the name Jack Ü, Beyoncé-d their debut album last night by releasing it on iTunes out of the blue—while they were in the midst of a 24-hour DJ set. Among the collection of dance-tent-ready anthems is "Where Are Ü Now," featuring none other than Justin Bieber. And guess what: It's pretty good!

It's ironic that three of the most aggro musicians around can make such a pretty song together, but Bieber's voice is in pure angel mode: It sweetly glides across Jack Ü's midnight landscape of piano chords and beckoning synths. For Jack Ü, this counts as a sensitive love ballad. For Justin Bieber, it counts as a step in the right direction. Check it out below.

We've said it before and we'll say it again: Kendall and Kylie Jenner have a magical quality that makes us all want to watch everything (and we mean everything) they do. And luckily for our tiny voyeuristic hearts, there's a good chance that watching everything they do is about to get a lot easier: According to Variety, The E! network may be giving the teens their own reality show.

Even though this information comes from an anonymous source, the spin-off seems likely to happen. After all, Keeping Up With the Kardashians has already generated many a classic spin-off show: Kourtney and Khloé Take The Hamptons, Kourtney and Kim Take Miami, Kourtney and Kim Take New York, and Khloé & Lamar.

With the amount of media attention surrounding their father, Bruce Jenner, and his rumored transition, as well as the attention around the girls themselves (Kendall is one of the fashion industry's new go-to models and Kylie seems to be branching into modelling as well), the show would make for some interesting television (not to mention a smart business move). Ryan Seacrest, tell us it's true. Please?

domino kirke is your favorite songwriting/birth expert

Though it wasn’t exactly the way Domino Kirke planned it, she has found herself in the business of creation, in a truly literal sense. Art runs in her family, for one. Firstly, her father famously drummed in British bands Free and Bad Company, and you may have heard of her two sisters: Lola, the rapidly rising actress who stunned us in Gone, Girl, and middle sister Jemima the artist, though you may be familiar with her other, more accidental project. Domino herself is a musician, but after she became a mother at the (atypical, in the Brooklyn creative community, at least) age of 24, she found inspiration in motherhood—for herself and other women—as a doula. Briefly putting her career on hold, Domino started Carriage House Birth, a service for women who are looking for a more personalized approach to birth.

“My family realized I was going to do birth work and then music they were like, ‘What’s a doula? This is not what you were meant to do!’ And I was like, ‘Everyone thinks they can only do one thing.’” However, Domino’s open approach to motherhood actually brought her closer to her family, specifically Jemima, who is a mother to two children. “We’re both moms and we’re both quite busy and I think we’re able to be there now for each other in a way that we weren’t when we were younger.” (Despite, of course, Jemima’s busy schedule: “I saw how overwhelming it was and I saw how she struggled initially to kind of get on board with the train and now I think it helped us out, we’re closer because of it.”)

The transition from being a musician, standing on stage and entirely self-absorbed, to focusing on the primal and entirely personal nature of birth was a whole mind-shift, says Domino. “I moved to Williamsburg when I was 19, and all my friends were musicians, all we did was wake up, have a coffee and write songs, and go out that night and get shitfaced,” she admits. “My day-to-day was extremely predictable and I did it with a band of people, a tribe. No one had kids—we were just so selfish for so long. I mean, the minute I had him, my son, I realized that I had to just time manage in a way that I never had to before.”

Now that her doula business is burgeoning and her son is growing older, Domino is returning to her musical roots with a new album called Independent Channel. Written in collaboration with Here We Go Magic’s Luke Temple, the album shifts away from Domino’s original organic sound to something subtly dance-friendly. “I think this is a lot more painful… a lot more experimental for me. Everything before used to have such a structure and design, and this was a lot more me just meeting up with Luke and playing with him.” The result has Temple’s spacey vibe with Domino’s dreamy vocals, which, together is endlessly listenable.

The whole experience is new for Domino, who is clearly no stranger to the industry. “It’s weird. I went so far away from music that I had to re-invent music again. I had to come back to music. I had to put music with an agenda down, and at least write for my son, write to keep writing, but the idea of having a music career had to go away for a while.” But now, the singer is able to balance better, even though her two jobs are on vastly different ends of the spectrum. “It’s two different brains. The mom brain that’s like self-less and ego-free and the on-stage ‘Look at me, like listen to my song, hope you like it.’ There, it is all ego. I think I struggled trying to find both, and then hanging out with Luke made me get excited about creating a new sound so I could kind of be a beginner again."
