To start on a scientific note for April, a deep breath predates everything—it predates movement, it’s the first element of our being before any of our five senses and even before our stomach or heartbeat. Aries represents the beginning of the zodiacal wheel, the rebirth of Spring, festivals like Easter across all cultures. A lot of new things are coming at us, the world around us begins to thaw and we can take our first breath again before taking our next steps.

introducing our april cover star, kim kardashian
If it seems nearly impossible to go a day without seeing Kim Kardashian's face, well, that's because it is. Thanks to her mother and manager, Kris Jenner, Ryan Seacrest, and the E! Network, the Earth and the interweb are now her own personal selfie stick. But do any of us know the #real Kim? We spent two paparazzi-ridden weeks with the mother, muse, and mogul to find out. And we do believe we scratched the surface. Pick up a copy of our April issue, on newsstands today, to get in on the action. No episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians will be the same again.
jamie dornan admits he once stalked a woman
Anyone who's seen Jamie Dornan's chilling turn as a serial killer on BBC2's crime thriller The Fall, might find themselves wondering how he got so good at being creepy. We now have our answer. In a new interview with the LA Times, Dornan admits that in order to enter the sadistic psyche of his character Paul Spector, the Irish actor took method acting to terrifying new heights.
"I, like, followed a woman off the train one day to see what it felt like to pursue someone like that," he admitted hesitantly. “I really kept my distance … she got off a few stops earlier than I was planning so I said right, I have to commit to this. I followed her around a couple of street corners and then was like: what are you doing?"
While most people might consider being followed by the Fifty Shades of Grey star an actual dream date, it sounds like the actor has hung up his stalking boots once and for all. “I’m sort of not proud of myself," he told the paper. "But I do honestly think I learned something from it, because I’ve obviously never done any of that. It was intriguing and interesting to enter that process of ‘what are you following her for?’ and ‘what are you trying to find out?’”
Seasons one and two of The Fall are currently streaming on Netflix.
fka twigs and robert pattinson are reportedly engaged
Breaking news: FKA twigs and Robert Pattinson are engaged, and you wouldn’t guess who let the secret slip.
In an interview with Vulture, America’s favorite "rappa ternt sanga," T-Pain, mentions twigs as one of his favorite artists, and laments that she hasn’t had the time to collaborate with him, given that she’s on tour so much—and engaged. Wait, what? “I don’t know if she wanted anybody to know that,” Pain says. Well, now we do. And we really hope this isn't just one huge, impressively-orchestrated April Fools' joke.
Rumors of twigs and Pattinson's romantic relationship started last September. After the two were seen holding hands, some Pattinson fans and Kristen Stewart devotees spewed racist remarks at the singer via Twitter. After addressing the trolls, Twigs never looked back. Pattinson started attending her concerts and introduced her to his family (who love her even though she's not as "clean-cut" as Stewart). The pair allegedly exchanged promise rings last month. Clearly, this is the next step. And we're very, very happy for them.
a baseball player and his gf's touching gift to the lgbt community
When Oakland Athletics pitcher Sean Doolittle and his girlfriend Eireann Dolan heard that the team was making June 17 LGBT Pride Night at their home stadium, they were proud: It's rare for a pro sports team in America to make such a public statement of solidarity. Dolan has two moms, and was moved by the team's support.
So when Dolan discovered that some season ticket holders were looking to scalp their tickets in protest, she decided to do something about it.
"If you'd like to sell your tickets to June 17th's LGBT Pride Night game, I will buy them from you at face value. As many as I can. No judgments. No questions asked, Dolan wrote on her blog Thank You Based Ball. "From there, I will donate any tickets I purchase to the Bay Area Youth Center's Our Space community for LGBTQ youth."
"Everybody is entitled to their own beliefs and as long as nobody is getting hurt, I'm happy," she added. "I also can't stop you from selling your tickets. I won't tell you that you are wrong or that you are not allowed to think or act that way."
So far, the response to Dolan's initiative has been overwhleming, with some fans donating their tickets to the Bay Area Youth Center's Our Space community for LGBT2 youth. Others have donated to the GoFundMe account Dolan started to help fill the stands at the game, with her boyfriend matching donations as high as $3000. Within two days, Dolan has already raised over $16,000, which will be donated to various LGBT organizations throughout the Bay Area.
So while it's Dolittle who'll be lacing up his kleats for the coming season, it's his girlfriend Eireann who hit the year's first home run.

rihanna brought april fool's to jimmy kimmel's bedroom
In honor of April Fool's Day, Rihanna and a guerilla crew of dancers and lighting people snuck into Jimmy Kimmel's bedroom while he was asleep, and woke him up in the best way possible.
With the help of Kimmel's wife, Molly McNearney (who's also the head writer on his show), RiRi and company crept upstairs as a camera followed, and once inside Kimmel's bedroom, proceeded to crank her new single, "Bitch Better Have My Money," while jumping on his bed, throwing pillows at him, and making it rain hundos. Considering Rihanna's new song is the toughest Rihanna song in the history of Rihanna songs, this all somehow manages to be strangely adorable.
supermarket: watches
Close your eyes and try to think back to a time before you had your phone on you at every waking moment—to a time when you needed a watch to tell time. Surprisingly enough, it wasn't that long ago. And although you would never let your phone battery die or (even worse) forget it at home, you should still rock a statement watch. Not only does it look cool, retro, and whathaveyou, but it's also a great, non-distracting way to check the time. Click through the gallery to see our favorite watches, including some killer unisex and men's picks.
here's the haunting trailer for the amy winehouse documentary
It's hard to believe it's already been four years since Amy Winehouse's untimely death. To mark the occasion, British documentary filmmaker Asif Kapadia has made Amy, a film about the late singer's brief, stormy time on earth. The two-hour documentary, which hits U.K. theaters on July 3, will use archival footage—including rare interviews and performances—to tell the heartbreaking story of a woman whose talent was so great that it ultimately led to her demise.
In the movie's haunting first trailer, we see a young, pre-fame Winehouse being interviewed, as a demo of "Back to Black" echoes in the background. "I'm not a girl trying to be a star or be anything other than a musician," she tells her interviewer. At that point he asks, "How big you do you think you're going to be?" And Winehouse replies, "I don't. I don't think I'm going to be at all famous." At that point, flashbulbs go off and the footage shifts to Winehouse in her later years, as her voiceover continues: "I don't think I could handle it, I would probably go mad."

maddie ziegler gets emotional in sia's latest vid
We'll admit that we watched a few episodes of Dance Moms here and there, but it was Sia's euphoric, instantly viral video for her then-single "Chandelier" that made us fall in love with Maddie Ziegler. Now, in the final video of the singer's Ziegler-centered trilogy, we're seeing a different side of the same girl who danced a heartbreaking pas de deux with one Shia LaBeouf.
In the video for "Big Girls Cry," Ziegler doesn't show off her athletic dancing skills, but instead showcases her impressive acting skills. In the facially-focused video, the 12-year-old goes through a vast range of emotions in three-and-a-half minutes. It's almost hard to believe that she's not some sort of wise, experienced, ethereal being in the body of a preteen girl. Just as she does in the studio and on stage, Ziegler commits herself fully, resulting in a product that impresses, inspires, and leaves us knowing that the young dancer is bound for continued success. Consider us fans for life.
inside the wildest party in america
When in Miami, do as the Miami’ians do: Find a pool, pour yourself a drink, and feel the beat of whatever music is thumping around you.
Every March, hoards of people flood the 305 for the Winter Music Conference. But while thousands crowded the main stages at Ultra, we found a more intimate place to get up and get down: The Red Bull Guest House. For the third year in a row, Red Bull threw the best party in town with showcases that ranged from DJ legends like The Magician and Danny Tenaglia to newcomers like Kygo. Oh, and this guy named Lil Wayne showed up. Heard of him?
So, while we patiently wait for our hangovers to diminish, let’s take a look back at one of the best parties of the year. Now, where’s that aloe for these sunburns...?
meet the internet's best comedy stars
From the dawn of time to about 10 years ago, not much changed in comedy. People stood around being funny, sometimes with friends. Other people laughed, within earshot, on the sofa, or stuck in traffic. Then we saw the potential of the Internet for more than porn. Podcasts became the new radio. YouTube showed up and nobody knew what to do with it—at first. Ditto Twitter. Five years ago Instagram arrived, giving credence to doughnut pics and selfie sticks. Vine’s only been around two years and has already launched careers—even in porn: grunt, moan, sigh, repeat.
sevyn streeter takes us behind-the-scenes
With a huge track on the Furious 7 soundtrack and her debut album, On The Verge, on the way, Sevyn Streeter is on fire. And while her vocals are super impressive on their own, it also helps that this R&B singer has some major style as well. A girl who rocks a bold lip is a girl after our own hearts.
To give us a glimpse at her glamorous life, Sevyn took us behind-the scenes of the Furious 7, showing her pre-show rituals and favorite red carpet moments. Flip through the gallery to look at the premiere from the singer's perspective, in her own words.
pharrell dropped some big missy elliott news
Give us a moment and a glass of water: Pharrell dropped some huge, mind-blowing Missy Elliot news on The Tonight Show last night and we're trying to piece our brains back together. Apparently there's a new Missy Elliott album on the way and (we assume) it's going to be insanely amazing.
When asked what music he was working on, the producer/musician dropped the news that he's working on the new (previously unannounced) Missy Elliott album. After Fallon told an odd anecdote about falling asleep on the same plane as the "Work It" rapper, Pharrell waxed poetic about the wonder that is Missy: "The way her mind works—like we're in the studio and just the things that she says and thinks about and her video concepts. I didn't know that all those video concepts were hers... I'm so proud of her."
This will be Elliott's first studio album since 2005's The Cookbook. No news on whether her music will take a new direction, but if it does, Pharrell would be the right man to help her. We can only hope there's a Miley Cyrus collaboration in her future.
Watch Zoë Kravitz In An Exclusive Clip From 'The Road Within'
After a year of bouncing around the festival circuit, the offbeat road-trip dramedy The Road Within is finally getting a theatrical release. The film stars Robert Sheehan as Vincent, a bright young man with Tourette's syndrome who is shipped off to an unconventional clinic after his mother passes away. There, he befriends his obsessive compulsive roommate (Dev Patel), and a feisty fellow patient who suffers from anorexia (Zoë Kravitz).
The film hit close to home for Kravitz, who recently opened up about her own struggle with anorexia while she was preparing to shoot.
“It was f–ked up, man. You could see my rib cage. I was just trying to lose more weight for the film but I couldn’t see: You’re there. Stop. It was scary," she told Complex. "[Now] I feel like something has left my body, like some part of me is gone now, something that was making me so insecure. And it feels amazing.”
In this exclusive clip from the film, Kravitz shares a moment with her new friends as they journey across the country to spread Vincent's mother's ashes at sea. If this heartwarming exchange is any indication of what we can expect when the film is released April 17, then The Road Within will be an important step towards removing the stigma surrounding mental illness.

paul walker's younger brother believes paul would be proud

the beginner's guide to latte art
Just because your local barista can create an exquisite foam fern with a subtle flick of her tattoo-covered wrist as she pours your five dollar latte doesn't mean it's easy. In fact, if you've ever actually tried to make latte art without proper training, you probably found yourself with a huge mess and a small burn. But who doesn't want the skills to make coffee look awesome? So, when Giorgio Milos, Master Barista at illy caffè, offered to stop by and show us a latte-art hack, we jumped at the chance.
Using illy's new Y5 Duo, a machine that makes single-serve espresso and coffee, Milos proceeded to totally blow our minds. Ahead, the easiest ways to fake being a latte-art expert, ever.
band crush: jolie holland
Jolie Holland is the kind of artist you've either never heard of or love so devotedly that you put her on every playlist, still cry when you hear certain songs, and recommend her music to everyone you love (guess which camp this writer falls into?). Originally a founding member of the Be Good Tanyas, Holland's been going solo for over a decade, amassing six albums, including 2004's critically acclaimed Escondida, and most recently, Wine Dark Sea.
Within that hard-to-define genre of folk-meets-rock-meets-blues, Holland is queen: Her jazzy vocals convey both urgency and dreaminess. You'll want to play a Jolie Holland record at a dinner party to impress your guests with your sophistication, and then keep playing it when you dim the lights with the guest who stays after everyone else leaves. It's not always what you'd call easy listening, though her songs are all beautifully composed and emotionally raw; but it's that complexity—the occasional dissonant riff cutting through a catchy chorus, a note held just a beat longer than you'd expect—that makes her work so hypnotizing.
Below, we caught up with Holland to talk about the past ten years of musical growth, feminism, and that time St. Vincent gave her a shout out at the Grammys.
In the years since your debut album, how has your sound changed?
I'm always following the sparks of whatever thing I happen to be crazy about. The deeper elements I am drawn to haven't changed in the past ten years. The Master and Margarita is still my favorite book. Nina Simone, Lou Reed, Zora Neale Hurston, Tom Waits, and Bob Dylan hung the moon and the stars, and their work endures. However, I think I really did fall deeper in love with some new elements in the past five years, and that's significant. I discovered Nick Tosches. I fell in love with The Stones. I think I started to be able to hear bands better, the combined action of every player.
How have you evolved as a musician?
Probably the thing that's most different about me, compared to who I was ten years ago, is that I learned how to lead a band into playing in the way that I always wanted. It took a lot of learning. I'm so gratified to have come to this place as a bandleader, because I wasted a lot of energy in the past, just because there was no one to teach me how to lead a band so that my musical vision could be accomplished. I had to trudge that long road in my own way.
Do you identify as a feminist? How does your answer to this question inform your music?
I am a feminist. I used to work at a women's shelter. I believe that I am feminist as a musician in the sense that I listen for power and depth from artists regardless of their gender. And I don't feel constrained to perform my music as a heteronormative femme. I'm not trying to be pretty in my music. Like Dylan recently said, quoting Sam Cooke, I'm not trying to be a good singer. I'm interested in expressing something, painting a picture, shooting for the heart.
What do you think about how many mainstream female musicians are identifying as feminists now? What does it mean for women in music?
I don't think it matters what people say about whether they're feminist or not. It's more important how they be. People who call themselves feminist and cut women down are despicable, beneath notice. I was deeply impressed with St. Vincent, as a feminist, for mentioning me in her Grammy acceptance letter. She once opened up for me on a tour at the Fillmore. She had third billing behind myself and another opener. Now we all know I'd be lucky to open up for her at this point. I'd be massively honored to be her backup singer. The fact that she had the grace and heart to speak of me, practically unknown in the rarefied air of the illustrious, jewel dripping, tux-and-designer gown world of the Grammys, speaks volumes. It's a wonder to me, in a feminist sense. She spoke from her center, just as she plays the fuck out of the guitar, from her center. And in her world, a voice is a voice. She seriously honored an unknown woman at the highest point of her career so far. In this, I see her as a true prince. She is demonstrating her freedom, her inner grandeur and grace. In her world, an unknown woman deserves honor, because from her center she acknowledges that honor. And she doesn't let the awful force of the immense tide of non-feminists or fake feminists to pull her off her center.

emma stone and andrew garfield might have some sad news
If ever there was an on-set romance between Hollywood millennials that felt meant to be, it was that of Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield. Our generation's Angelina and Brad, the duo—who met while filming 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man—seemed to be completely supportive of each others' growing careers. But now, as a "source" tells the reputable publication that is Star Magazine, their relationship is "on hold."
The magazine points out that Garfield didn't attend The Oscars or The Golden Globes, even though Stone was nominated at both for her role in Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). “Yes, Andrew was filming but he could have gotten away if he really wanted to," says the source. "The fact was, neither one of them wanted to plaster on a smile and pretend everything was OK when it wasn’t."
Will this be the end of adorable paparazzi hijinks and fan photobombing? We hope not.
